Are the iPhone 16 Pre-Order and Sale Dates Right Around the Corner?

We recently reported an iPhone assembly facility in China, Foxconn, has hired 50,000 workers in two weeks as Apple aims to crank out 90 million new iPhones. It looks like the iPhone 16, which will consist of the usual four models (iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max), could be in the hands of consumers as early as next month. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading to one of the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro models that were released nearly a year ago, you might want to hold out a bit longer.
Various insiders expect the iPhone 16 keynote, where Apple will debut the device, to be held as early as September 10th. If that’s accurate, Pre-orders and sales would follow shortly thereafter, on Friday, September 13, with the new iPhones showing up in stores (and eager customers’ hands) by Friday, September 20.
What to Expect from the iPhone 16
For those interested in photography, AI, and overall performance, the iPhone 16 is unlikely to disappoint. Beyond the possibility of new colors and Apple’s new A18 chip, here are some of the features we’re likely to see in at least some of the upcoming iPhone 16 models.
- Larger Displays: Both iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature a larger display for the first time since the iPhone 12. The Pro and Pro Max models will have a 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively.
- A new Capture Button: A new “Capture” button is rumored to be coming to the side of all iPhone 16 models. This button will reportedly mimic the functionality of a traditional camera shutter button. When pressed halfway, the iPhone’s camera will focus and set the exposure until the picture is taken.
- Battery and Charging improvements: The entire iPhone 16 lineup could include larger batteries that support longer use between charges. Pro models might even support faster charing speeds, with up to 40W wired charging, and also include stacked battery technology (similar to electric vehicles) that would offer efficiency, longevity, and better cooling.
- Camera Upgrades: The iPhone 16 Pro will gain the 5x telephoto camera that was introduced exclusively in the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max last year.
- Action Button: The iPhone 15 Pro (and Apple Watch Ultra) include an action button expected to become standard on all iPhone 16 models. This button will replace to mute switch and can be assigned multiple functions like a shortcut, camera, flashlight, and more.
- Apple Intelligence: The new A18 chip will allow all iPhone 16 models to support Apple Intelligence.
Will the iPhone 16 be worth the upgrade, or should you wait for the iPhone 17? We’ll have to wait to see the price at launch and how it impacts other available new models. Ultimately, it depends on your level of satisfaction with your current iPhone and its features, your need and desire for the latest features, and your budget. Either way, you could feel left behind if your current iPhone won’t support iOS 18.
