Although we’ve known for a few months that Apple’s hit series, Ted Lasso, would be getting a new season, it was never entirely clear how the story would continue.

After all, when Ted Lasso came to a wrap in May 2023, star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis told the press that the finale was “the end of this story that we wanted to tell.” Others like Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) had also made it clear that the show was only written with a three-season arc in mind.

Still, nobody quite wanted to come out and say this was the last we’d see of the infectiously optimistic and kind-hearted football coach, and it wasn’t long before we started getting oblique hints of a season 4 in the works.

By August, those were more than hints as industry news sources began sharing reports that the producers were sniffing around to renew contracts for the original cast. In the fall, reliable reports said Ted Lasso Season 4 was on track to begin filming early this year, and Nick Mohammad (Nate Shelley) dropped an oblique but obvious hint last month confirming that things are ramping up.

Ted Lasso is one of the most popular shows on Apple TV+ by far, so it’s not a surprise that Apple (and its studio partner, Warner Bros.) wants to bring it back for an encore. It brought in record viewers and became the most nominated freshman comedy series in Emmy Awards history (beating out 2010’s Glee), winning seven awards: Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (Jason Sudeikis), Outstanding Supporting Actress (Hannah Waddingham), Outstanding Support Actor (Brett Goldstein), Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing, Outstanding Sound Mixing, and Outstanding Casting.

Nevertheless, nobody was saying much about whether this would be a continuation of Ted’s adventures with AFC Richmond or a new story in the Lasso-verse. While we still don’t have an official word, Sigmund Judge, podcaster and writer at MacStories, posted on X today that the focus will shift away from the main AFC Richmond to forming a new women’s team.

Judge also adds that the film may not get rolling until later this spring, rather than early this year as initially predicted. This aligns with Mohammad’s post, where he spoke about rescheduling several of his one-man show dates in the spring.

While Sigmund Judge has a solid track record for reporting on Apple TV+ productions, this is still just a rumor, so it’s best taken with a grain of salt. At least one person replied with a dissenting opinion, saying, “Not true, the focus will still be predominantly on the men’s team,” but that came from an unknown account on X, and wasn’t backed up by any additional details.

In August, Warner Bros. Television picked up options on many of the Ted Lasso stars, which suggests we’ll see most of the original cast in some form. Besides Phil Dunster (Jamie Tart), who has moved on to other things, these will likely be regular appearances.

Further, Jason Sudeikis is also on board. Last year, co-creator and writer Bill Lawrence made it clear that a decision to continue Ted Lasso was up to Ted himself.

Whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it. Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children.

It’s unclear whether Sudeikis will regularly reprise his on-screen role. He’s at least equally important to the show in his role as head writer, so that could be the main reason for his return.
