Apple’s 2026 Back to School Promo Is Live — But There’s a Catch

Gift cards are back, but a shorter timeline, limited products, and recent price hikes sour the deal

As expected, Apple has just launched its 2026 Back to School Promotion in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and this year the program is reverting to gift cards, pivoting away from last year’s brief detour into free accessories.

After six years of going live in June, the Back to School promotion has also returned to its pre-2020 July schedule, although it’s not entirely clear if that’s the new normal or simply the result of Apple giving its recent price hikes time to sink in.

In late June, Apple raised the prices of its entire Mac and iPad lineups, a rising tide that carried educational pricing to new heights in its wake. Its Back to School promotion won’t do anything to address that directly, but at least you’ll be getting something in return if you’re planning to buy a new MacBook or iPad.

While Apple’s summer student promotion historically focused on headphones — Beats from 2015–2019 and AirPods in the early 2020s — before transitioning back to gift cards in 2022, it seems last year’s surprise pivot to free accessories like AirPods was a one-off. This year, Apple is returning to the familiar gift card format — the same sort of thing it does for its Black Friday deals.

Even though that doesn’t translate directly back to cash in your pocket, a gift card is still far more useful than a set of headphones that you may not actually need. Chances are you’ll need some more practical accessories for a new Mac or iPad, and an Apple Gift Card can take some of the sting out of that.

Further, even if you don’t need anything else from the Apple Store (and, let’s face it, you can almost always find better accessory prices elsewhere), an Apple Gift Card can simply be added to your Apple Account, where the balance can be used to pay for everything from app purchases to an Apple Music subscription.

Since the Back to School promotion is mostly about MacBooks and iPads, the gift card values are fairly simple: You’ll get a $150 gift card for a MacBook Pro, or a $100 gift card for a MacBook Air, iPad Pro, or iPad Air (in Canada, those values translate to $210 CAD and $140 CAD, respectively).

You may notice this is a pretty specific list. That’s because those are literally the only four products eligible for this promotion. No desktop Macs are included, nor are the iPad mini or standard iPad. Even the MacBook Neo — Apple’s made-for-students laptop — isn’t on this list.

You’ll still get standard education pricing on those — as long as you can prove you’re an eligible buyer — which works out to between 5 and 10 percent off, but there’s also still a good chance you can find better deals elsewhere.

Eligible customers — what Apple calls “qualified purchasers” — include faculty, staff, and students of higher education institutions, including those who have been accepted into a program at one of these universities, colleges, or other institutions. Parents can also make purchases on behalf of their eligible post-secondary students. However, contrary to a common misconception, Apple doesn’t offer educational pricing to K–12 students; only employees of those schools are eligible, although there is a carve-out for homeschool teachers.

These gift card promos are the closest Apple ever comes to actually putting products on sale, but fortunately plenty of other retailers still do, so we’d recommend shopping around a bit.

You can also look for deals on Apple’s Certified Refurbished store, as these come in “like new” condition, fully tested with the same warranty and eligibility for AppleCare+ as a new device.

In addition to the small list of eligible products, Apple is also running the promotion for a much shorter time. It only runs through August 27, 2026, although that gives you plenty of time to keep your eyes open for better deals, especially since the cutoff is based on the order date, regardless of when the product actually arrives in your hands.
