Ted Lasso Could Return for a Fourth Season

While many lamented the end of Ted Lasso, we may not have seen the final kick yet. The highly acclaimed Apple Original Series now seems poised for a comeback.
Even as Season 3 of Ted Lasso came to a close, there were hints it might not be the end. Series star Jason Sudeikis merely called it “the end of this story that we wanted to tell,” leaving the door open to the possibility of telling a new one.
Several cast members and producers emphasized that Ted Lasso was written to run only three seasons, and the finale did a nice job of wrapping things up nicely. However, fans remained hungry for more, and it’s understandable that Apple and Warner Bros, the studio that produced Ted Lasso, would want to capitalize on a show that brought in record viewers, became the most nominated freshman comedy series in Emmy Awards history (beating out 2010’s Glee), and the first to land an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, plus three others for outstanding lead and supporting actors, and three more for editing, sound mixing, and casting.
So, it’s not surprising that rumors of a fourth season of Ted Lasso have been making the rounds for months. Most recently, Nick Mohammed, who plays Nate Shelley, hinted that the “Complete Series” Blu-ray release may turn out to not be as “complete” as advertised.
It was hard to know what to make of Mohammed’s comments at the time, but he likely knew more than he was letting on. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. Television is taking the first steps toward resurrecting Ted Lasso for a fourth season.
Specifically, sources report the studio has picked up the options on three key cast members: Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins). These three are part of the same UK acting union, Equity, which is likely why they’re the first on the list. However, sources say that the studio will be reaching out to Ted Lasso cast members with SAG-AFTRA contracts next.

Many of those options have expired, so Warner Bros. will reportedly need to make new deals with stars Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) and Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard), who are also co-creators and executive producers of the series. However, it’s doubtful that the studio would pick up the contract options on the three UK actors without Sudeikis already on board; earlier this month, co-creator and writer Bill Lawrence told Collider that the decision to continue Ted Lasso was “all up to Jason Sudeikis.”
Whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it. Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children.Bill Lawrence
Warner Bros. is also reportedly planning to pick up Juno Temple (Keeley Jones). However, Phil Dunster (Jamie Tart) may not be returning due to conflicts with other series’ — he’s currently working on Prime Video’s The Devil’s House and Apple’s Surface. Deadline isn’t sure which other stars may be approached for a Season 4, although many have repeatedly said they’d be happy to reprise their roles if given the opportunity. At the very least, Dunster and others may pop in for guest appearances if returning as a regular cast member isn’t possible.
While nothing is certain, getting the cast back on board is an essential first step in greenlighting a fourth season. Sources say the studio still needs to get budget approval and work out scheduling issues, particularly with actors now working elsewhere. However, it seems that Apple TV+ and WBTV execs are optimistic, as early preparations are being made to open a writers’ room. If everything comes together as planned, Ted Lasso Season 4 could begin filming early next year.
