Apple Drops Official ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Trailer

In only a week, Ted Lasso will return to the pitch for what promises to be another brilliant season of Apple’s hit comedy series. While we’ve seen plenty of hints on what to expect from the premiere, Apple is now giving us a full Season 4 trailer to help whet our appetites.

The new season is expected to be a sort of “reboot” of the original Ted Lasso, continuing the role of Ted (Jason Sudeikis), Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), and crew as they step into an entirely new set of challenges: coaching a new second division women’s football team.

When Ted Lasso premiered in 2020, nobody could have known the hit that it was going to become. By its second season, it had brought in record viewers for Apple TV and scored Apple a record-breaking 20 Emmy nominations — the most ever received by a freshman comedy anywhere — not just on streaming services. The previous record had been held by Glee, which earned 19 nominations back in 2010, which kind of emphasizes just how high a bar this was.

However, Ted and the gang not only went on to win their promotion in-universe, moving back up to the Premier League at the end of Season 2, but also made history with four Primetime Emmy Award Wins, including the overall category award for Outstanding Comedy Series, plus Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jason Sudeikis and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Waddingham.

In an amusing twist, four of the eight nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series that year were for Ted Lasso; Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift were all in the running, but it was Goldstein (Roy Kent) who walked away with the award.

Apple also came away that year with Comedy Series Emmy Awards for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing, Outstanding Sound Mixing, and Outstanding Casting, giving Ted Lasso a total of seven awards.

Ted Lasso also became Apple’s first “triple-crown” winner, picking up a Golden Globe and Critics Choice win for Best Comedy. That put it in rarified territory alongside Schitt’s Creek, Fleabag, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Modern Family (the first to achieve this, the same year the first Critics Choice awards were held). The Bear and Hacks would later join this club, but Apple’s The Studio eventually surpassed it, topping off that trifecta with a BAFTA International award.

Despite Ted Lasso’s incredibly positive reception, the show still had a built-in expiration date. The show was written with a very definitive three-season arc from the very start, and none of the writers — who included Sudeikis and Hunt — wanted to try and artificially extend it. As Season 3 came to a close, Sudeikis added a note of finality by calling it “the end of this story that we wanted to tell.”

However, he never actually said it was the end of Ted. Just because they finished the story they wanted to tell doesn’t mean there wasn’t room for a new one, and fans and insiders continued to speculate on whether the creative forces behind Ted Lasso might be persuaded to make a comeback.

Still, Sudeikis truly did appear to be finished. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said that even though he was pulling in $1 million per episode by the third season, he didn’t want to keep the show going just for the sake of continuing. “The story was told. Ted went home to be with his son. I wasn’t going to have Ted uproot their life to justify the money truck. It made no sense to me.”

That’s likely why things remained quiet for nearly a year. It wasn’t until early 2024 that Sudeikis realized that Ted Lasso had become “bigger than he was,” and realized that maybe the show wasn’t really done. In February 2024, he convened the show’s original writers in Ojai, California to see if “there was more story to mine.”

However, for the rest of us who weren’t at the Ojai Valley Inn, the first oblique hint that something was up didn’t arrive until a few months later, when Nick Mohammed (Nate Shelley), gave us a subtle wink that the “Complete Series” Blu-ray release might not actually be “complete.”

By August, Hollywood insiders started seeing subtle clues that someone was trying to get the band back together, and Sudeikis himself finally confirmed it in early 2025. Following that, Tim Cook teased it last summer with a promo image that showed Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins), Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton), Juno Temple (Keeley Jones), and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) sitting around a table in a diner in Kansas City.

Combined with Ted’s return to the US at the end of Season 3 and the mounting evidence that Season 4 would see him coaching a women’s football team, it wasn’t hard to connect the dots and assume this was a photo of Rebecca and crew coming over to talk him into coming back to Richmond. This week’s trailer shows him diving right in, so we don’t imagine he’ll need much convincing — but we’ll have to wait and see.

There will also be some significant additions to the cast, one of which hints at a key plot point for the new arc. Grant Feely, best known for his portrayal of the young Luke Skywalker in Obi-Wan Kenobi, has been cast in the role of Ted’s son Henry, and there’s already a first look image of him sitting in the venerable Richmond pub.

Another leading role will be filled by Tanya Reynolds, a well-known English actress who has previously appeared in the Sky One series Delicious and Netflix’s Sex Education, who’s shown coaching alongside Beard and Ted.

Sadly, the new season is also excluding some favorites from the initial run. Phil Dunster, who played Jamie Tartt in the first three seasons, is tied up on other projects, although that doesn’t rule out guest appearances, and there’s also no indication that Nick Mohammed (Nate Shelley) is coming back — an odd omission considering how active he was in teasing Season 4 early last year.

Ted Lasso Season 4 will premiere on August 5 for a standard ten-episode run, with new episodes coming every Wednesday through October 7.
