It may seem quaint in a day of pervasive streaming services, but many folks still like to collect physical media for their favorite shows. Thankfully, Ted Lasso fans will soon have that option, as the entire series is expected to launch on Blu-ray in the coming months.

Update: The folks at AppleInsider just confirmed that Ted Lasso: The Complete Series is now available for pre-order on Amazon. It’s slated for release on July 30, 2024. The Blu-Ray version is $84.99, and the DVD set is $74.99. No word yet on whether there will be any bonus content or special features.

Rumors of the show’s impending release on physical media appeared in an April 24 post in the Blu-ray.com forums, with the poster claiming they were corroborating a previously removed thread. This also appears to have been independently confirmed by 9to5Mac.

The excellent sports comedy series Ted Lasso, which originally streamed on Apple TV+, will be getting a Complete Series Blu-ray collection from Warner tentatively on July 30th. I’ll post updates when more details come in. A previous thread was made for this, but info was removed. I’m now able to corroborate his source with my own.MifuneFan

In some ways, it’s not surprising considering that Ted Lasso was one of Apple’s most popular shows of all time, attracting record viewers and scoring four Primetime Emmy awards — including Outstanding Comedy Series. It also beat out Glee to become the most-nominated freshman comedy series in Emmy Awards history.

However, the release isn’t necessarily an Apple initiative. Relatively few Apple TV+ shows have made the transition to physical media, and the ones that have are more likely a result of the studios behind them than anything that Apple wants.

For example, the 2021 Apple TV+ drama series Defending Jacob came to Blu-ray in 2021, but it was released by Paramount, the studio that actually produced the series, despite it being bankrolled by Apple as an “Apple Original.”

In fact, the DVD release of Defending Jacob arrived devoid of any Apple branding, plus some never-before-seen bonus content and special features that weren’t available on Apple TV+. This suggests that many of the deals Apple has signed provide only limited exclusivity, likely allowing a first-run period on Apple TV+ and barring them from landing on rival streaming services like Netflix. Apple also has a similar arrangement with Apple Arcade game developers.

In this case, it’s Warner Bros that’s reportedly preparing the Blu-ray release of Ted Lasso. The show wrapped its final season on May 31, 2023, so the timing suggests that Apple and Warner agreed to one year of exclusivity after the last episode aired on Apple TV+.

Apple and its partners have followed an even more typical Hollywood release trend with its big-budget feature films. Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, and Argylle all came to premium video-on-demand services through their respective studios even before they debuted on Apple TV+. Blu-ray versions of these have yet to appear, but likely will at some point.

The Ted Lasso Blu-ray release is expected to be marketed as a complete edition that will include all three seasons of the show in one box. It’s not yet known if there will be any extra features or bonus content.

While the three-season run of Ted Lasso told a complete story with few loose threads remaining, many of the stars were cagey about whether it was really the end of Ted’s character. Star Jason Sudeikis has reportedly expressed an interest in reprising the role in a spin-off, a sequel, or even a fourth season. With Hollywood insiders reporting that Apple, Warner Bros, and some members of the cast are still exploring ideas, it’s possible we could see more, although nobody is quite sure what form that might take.
