Today’s WWDC 2026 Keynote address strayed from Apple’s traditional path of highlighting each of the upcoming operating systems for their devices in favor of focusing on the new Siri AI and other platform-wide features like new and improved parental controls. However, Apple still spent a couple of minutes highlighting the latest exploits of its “crack marketing team” and the “unconventional methods” they have for naming macOS releases.

Meet macOS 27 ‘Golden Gate

Apple software boss Craig Federighi tried to build the suspense before revealing the new macOS 27 moniker, but to this writer, he only succeeded in making the Apple marketing team sound like they were on a 2026 version of a “Magic Bus” trip — complete with accompanying psychedelic graphics. Considering California does allow recreational marijuana sales, it may indeed have been that type of situation.

Apple said it focused on improving the performance of macOS, while also refining the Mac operating system’s underlying technologies, similar to how it treated its Mac OS X Snow Leopard release back in 2009.

“With improvements at the very core of the system and enhancements to apps and experiences you rely on every day, macOS feels better than ever,” said Apple.

Coming along for the ride are multiple design changes, including at least one feature many macOS users will appreciate (at least if Reddit complaints are any measure): the addition of a slider in macOS that allows users to customize the opacity of Liquid Glass.

“Updates to Liquid Glass ensure exceptional readability with more uniform refraction and improved contrast,” said Apple. “Uniform toolbars, edge-to-edge sidebars, and updated window shapes and menu bar icons deliver a more refined design. And a new slider lets you easily customize how Liquid Glass looks, from ultra-clear to fully tinted.”

Design changes also include the addition of a unified toolbar at the top of the screen, so that icons no longer hover in space, plus a sidebar that now expands to the edge of a window.

However, macOS Golden Gate isn’t just a pretty face, as the new version will bring several more improvements, including faster AirDrop transfers, speedier network file browsing, boosted syncing for the Messages app, improved Spotlight search suggestions, and other changes.

And let’s not forget, macOS Golden Gate is finally getting the long-promised Apple Intelligence and Siri upgrades, which include personal context, on-screen awareness, and a new “Search or Ask” interface for Spotlight powered by the more intelligent “Siri AI.”

“Powered by Apple Intelligence, Siri AI is your conversational AI assistant with entirely new capabilities on your Mac,” said Apple. “Ask open-ended questions, brainstorm ideas for work or creative projects, and engage in natural, back-and-forth conversations. And when you search in Spotlight, you can choose ‘Ask Siri’ as the top hit.”

macOS Golden Gate will also include Apple’s revamped, “powerful, intuitive, and easy-to-use” child safety features that will allow parents to more easily manage what content and apps their offspring will have access to, as well as who they can communicate with.

Apple says macOS Golden Gate will be compatible with the following Macs:

  • MacBook Neo (2026)
  • MacBook Air with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
  • MacBook Pro with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
  • iMac with Apple silicon (2021 and later)
  • Mac mini with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
  • Mac Studio with Apple silicon (2022 and later)
  • Mac Pro with Apple silicon (2023 and later)

As we already knew, Intel processor support is dropped completely in Golden Gate.

During the keynote, Federighi said that the most powerful Apple Intelligence on-device models, which includes Siri AI features like expressive voices, and more advanced dictation, “will be coming to our most capable iPhone, iPad, and Mac systems.”

For Mac users, this means an M3 or later with at least 12 GB of memory. That also notably leaves the recently released MacBook Neo out as it only has 8 GB of unified memory, plus an A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro era, which is also off the list.

The first macOS Golden Gate developer beta is available today, with Siri AI available for testing right away — once you make it through the wait list, that is. The first public beta release is expected in July, with a “fall” release for the general public — usually in September, although Apple has not yet announced a specific release date yet.
