Apple on Tuesday seeded the third developer beta of its upcoming iOS 12 software update.

The new beta version should now be available from the Apple Developer Portal, or as an over-the-air update for devices with the proper certificate installed. A public beta version that correlates with developer beta 3 should also be released soon.

What’s New in iOS 12 Beta 3?

As far as what’s new in the update, iOS 12 beta 3 adds the following features (according to beta testers):

  • Adds the new Maps redesign in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Updates the Voice Memos interface for iPads running the latest version.
  • Moves Share My Location options from the Privacy pane of Settings to a user’s Apple ID card menu.

Notably, iOS 12 beta 3 also patches a handful of significant bugs and known issues.

  • For example, a bug in the previous beta rendered CarPlay unable to connect or its navigation features unusable for many users. According to Apple’s release notes, that issue has now been resolved.
  • There are also bug fixes for an issue that caused FaceTime to crash on launch, a handful of problems with Siri, and several glitches on Screen Time, among others.

iOS 12

iOS 12 itself is a significant update to Apple’s mobile operating system. One of its chief features is a top-to-bottom overhaul of the OS that will allow it to run much faster and more efficiently on all devices — particularly older iPhones and iPads.

It also adds a massive upgrade to the native Maps application, which will launch in California when the final version is released before being rolled out in additional locations across the U.S.

The update also upgrades Siri with a new “Shortcuts” capability and contextual reminders, adds multi-user augmented reality, experiences with ARKit 2, and allows Group Notifications for the first time in iOS’s history.

There are also new customizable Memoji characters, new Animoji, group FaceTime support for up to 32 users, and a suite of “digital health” tools that include Screen Time and updated Do Not Disturb options, among many other features.

iOS 12 will be released to the public in the fall as a free over-the-air update. In the meantime, the software is being tested by registered developers and those who are part of Apple’s public beta testing program.
