For those who don’t think Apple’s new spatial computing headset is expensive enough, Russian luxury mod brand Caviar has found a way to elevate it to the price of a high-end car.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise from the company that gave us the 18-karat AirPods Max — with a $100K price tag to match — but the Apple Vision Pro CVR Edition takes things to another level, not only accenting Apple’s already-pricey headset in gold and leather but also adding a flip-down visor for those who really like the Daft Punk look.

Cavier describes it as a “Rolls-Royce experience in VR,” and that comparison isn’t without merit. The standard Apple headband has been replaced with “legendary Connolly leather” from the same supplier that provides materials to the British Royal Court and Rolls-Royce.

While the description suggests it will ensure the “utmost comfort for the owner,” the jury is still out on how much of a difference that will make in practical terms. Many Vision Pro owners have already observed that it’s heavy and uncomfortable, and that’s still going to be the case no matter how soft and durable a leather headband is.

However, Caviar has added another twist beyond the bling with a flip-up cover that goes over the front eyepiece, which the company says is inspired by Tom Ford flip-up glasses and Gucci ski masks.

Judging by the public’s reaction, not everyone appreciates having their eyes displayed on the external screen. With Caviar’s version, you can preserve your privacy if you wish. The choice is yours to make. Caviar

Although Caviar isn’t wrong—many folks feel the EyeSight feature, which tries to simulate your eyes, is a bit weird and creepy—an 18-karat gold mask is a pretty expensive and ostentatious way to disable it.

Caviar hasn’t announced pricing for the new headset—it’s available “upon request,” and as the old saying goes, if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it. Some sources indicate a starting price of $39,900, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

As with most of Caviar’s high-end special edition products, this will also be a very limited run — the company plans to make only 24 units of the Vision Pro CVR Edition, and they won’t be available until the beginning of next year. At least that will give you time to save up a bit more.

Caviar is also offering an $8,060 custom “Vision” iPhone 15 Pro that it claims will “perfectly complement your Apple headset,” although we’re not sure we see it.

To put some context around this, Caviar’s AirPods Max Golden Black/White editions raised the $549 over-ear headphones to a stratospheric $108,000. However, those were even more exclusive, with only one of each color released worldwide — and they were “accompanied by a personal consultant.”

Some of Caviar’s initiatives go well beyond simply dressing up Apple products in luxury gold and leather finishes. Three years ago, there was the $10,000 Jobs 4 Gold Edition iPhone 12 Pro Max that purportedly included an authentic fragment of Apple’s co-founder’s original famous turtleneck embedded right inside the Apple logo in a design that hearkened back to the museum-piece quality of the iPhone 4s, which was unveiled by Apple the day before Jobs’ untimely death.
