So far, Apple’s groundbreaking new Vision Pro spatial computing headset has been a US-only affair, but that could soon change if new code found in the visionOS operating system is any indication of what’s to come.

Apple has been relatively quiet about its plans for the Vision Pro abroad, preferring to focus on its successes in the US for now, where it’s estimated to have sold around 200,000 units of the pricey headset in the five weeks since it launched. However, when it first showed off the headset at its June 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), it promised an early 2024 US launch followed by other counties “later” in the year.

Although it didn’t offer any specifics about what “later” meant or what countries would be included on that list, most analysts believe that English-speaking countries like Canada and the UK will most likely be the next ones on deck. Nevertheless, there’s also plenty of evidence that Apple has been getting ready for a wider international release for quite some time.

Only a month after the Vision Pro debuted, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman was already reporting that, while he believed Canada and the UK would see the first international releases, Apple’s engineers were also already working on localization for several foreign markets and languages, including France, Germany, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea.

While Gurman didn’t have a timeframe back then, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo chimed in shortly before the Vision Pro went on sale to suggest that one or more international releases would likely come by June, when Apple will be hosting its 2024 WWDC event. Kuo’s logic was that Apple wants to use its annual developer event to encourage and empower a broader visionOS developer community, which necessitates more developers being able to get their hands on the Vision Pro hardware.

In late February, Kuo doubled down on his prediction. While he didn’t specify which countries may be coming next, several other sources have also pointed to an imminent release in China.

Now, we’re seeing some new evidence that Apple is getting ready for this, thanks to the latest visionOS 1.1 release. In addition to some nice tweaks to the virtual keyboard in that latest release, the code sleuths over at MacRumors have found evidence of support for 12 new languages beyond US English.

Those languages aren’t yet available in the visionOS user interface, but there’s underlying code that suggests they’re coming, and they provide some pretty obvious hints for which countries could be next on the list:

CountryLanguages
AustraliaEnglish (Australia)
CanadaEnglish (Canada) and French (Canada)
ChinaCantonese, Traditional and Chinese, Simplified
FranceFrench (France)
GermanyGerman (Germany)
JapanJapanese and English (Japan)
SingaporeEnglish (Singapore)
South KoreaKorean
UKEnglish (UK)

A launch in China would likely include Hong Kong and possibly Taiwan.

The additional language support could merely be tied to offering alternative language options for US Vision Pro owners. However, the multiple flavors of both English and French much more strongly suggest a launch in those countries, as the distinctions between some of those are pretty subtle.

Expanded language support could appear in visionOS 1.2, although Apple has yet to release a beta of that. There are also reports that Apple is already working on visionOS 2.0 for a possible WWDC preview. However, that version likely won’t be released beyond the beta stages until later this year.

Either way, with WWDC likely about three months away, we should be hearing something soon if the rumors of a pre-WWDC global rollout are indeed true.
