Word on the street this morning is that Samsung was gearing up to make some big moves in the mobile payments space early next year with the South Korean tech-titan’s watered down, cross-platform Samsung Pay app — appropriately dubbed ‘Samsung Pay mini’ — launching on both the iOS and Android platforms in January. However, according to recent rumors, it turns out that the app will no longer be launching on the Apple App Store.

According to a report published Monday morning by South Korea’s ETNews, Apple rejected Samsung’s registration application to publish its Samsung Pay Mini app for the iOS platform. And while Samsung Pay mini on iOS would have only been an online-based mobile payments platform – as opposed to Apple Pay which is deeply integrated into iOS and macOS – Apple nonetheless decided to thwart Sammy’s mobile payment ambitions to set up shop on its home turf.

A Samsung representative indicated shortly after the decision was made that it doesn’t intend to file another application for the app on iOS — but instead, channel its energies on the app’s Android-based variant.

“After Apple rejected registration of Samsung Pay Mini onto its app store, we have decided to focus only on smartphones with Android OS,” the representative stated, adding in his company’s defense, that “Apple might have rejected registration of Samsung Pay Mini in order to keep Samsung Pay, which is more popular than Apple Pay, in check.”

Perhaps a more plausible explanation of why Apple actually rejected the mobile payments platform from its fiercest rival in the tech space is because Apple wouldn’t knowingly and willfully give the South Korean tech-giant an open opportunity to pick away at its own profits.

In any event, not all hope is lost for Samsung — the company will still release its forthcoming app on the Google Play Store, marking the company’s first attempt at bringing its proprietary mobile payments platform to Android devices other than its own.

According to the ETNews report, field testing has already been underway with several of Samsung’s South Korean-based partner banks and therefore, it’s likely that Samsung Pay Mini will be released — at least in the South Korean market — sooner rather than later. Nothing else is known about ‘Samsung Pay Mini’ at this point, but we assume the company will release an official statement when opening day draws nearer.
