Picking up a Series 12? Don’t Buy a New Apple Watch Stand Just Yet

The new Series 12 and Ultra 4 bump fast charging to 10W, leaving older accessories behind

Faster charging seems to be the name of the game this month. During last week’s “Surprise and Shine” event, Apple highlighted how the iPhone 18 Pro models and even the iPhone Duo can now reach a 50 percent charge in only 20 minutes — with the right adapter.

However, Apple had another surprise in store: it’s also added faster charging to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. While it didn’t explicitly mention that during the event, it shared the details in its official newsroom announcement afterwards:

Apple Watch Series 12 also offers faster charging: Just 15 minutes now gets up to 12 hours of additional battery life — 50 percent more than the previous model — so users can quickly recharge while getting ready for the day or before bed.

While this year’s Apple Watch Series 12 doesn’t boost the overall battery life, Apple is promising up to 10 hours of outdoor workout time on a single charge. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 pushes that to 18 hours, while also getting a nice boost from its predecessor — up to 50 hours in normal mode and 84 hours in Low Power Mode. It can also provide up to 18 hours of additional battery life after a 15-minute charge, which also works out to a 50 percent improvement over its predecessor.

The only catch? As you might expect, you’re going to need the right Apple Watch charger and power adapter to pull off these speeds. While that’s not going to be quite as complicated as it is for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max — especially since Apple includes one in the box — you’ll still need to make sure you’re using the correct brick.

Specifically, the new Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger (model A3277), which can also be purchased separately for $29, provides 10W of power — double the 5W of the previous charger. It’s still USB-C on the wired end, but that means you’ll definitely want to use a power brick that can deliver 10W or more to get the fastest charging speeds.

Most modern USB-C chargers should be able to pull this off — 15W to 20W is now the baseline for any decent charger, so as long as you avoid the dollar store options you should be fine. But if you’ve been using an older USB-C brick, it may be time to upgrade. Many USB-C battery packs also typically only deliver 5W of power.

More disappointing is that few, if any, third-party charging stands currently on the market will be rated for those fastest charging speeds. Even this gonzo 6-in-1 charging station, which provides 100W of power overall, still only has a 5W Apple Watch charger.

Although there’s nothing wrong with a charger supporting a higher wattage, Apple Watch chargers are built to Apple’s specifications, and until this month, that was 5W across the board.

In fact, until the Apple Watch Series 7 came along in 2021 — the last time Apple significantly upped its charging speeds — the Apple Watch charging standard was only 2W. The faster 5W charger was introduced back then, and it took a few months for third-party accessory makers to catch up.

The practical upshot of this is that if you’re planning to pick up a new Apple Watch this month, you may want to hold off on buying any new third-party chargers until the 10W versions start showing up. In fact, even if you’re not upgrading just yet, this isn’t the right time to be purchasing more Apple Watch charging stands. It’s far better to wait for the new ones, which won’t likely cost much more, so you’ll at least be future-proofed when you do eventually upgrade.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted as new options arrive on the market, but for now, if you need an extra fast charger, the Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger is the only game in town. Purchasing it directly from the Apple Store is the easiest way to guarantee you’re getting the newest one, as Amazon still appears to be selling the 5W version. The model number for the 10W version is A3277, which is helpful when checking physical boxes at Best Buy, but less so with online retailers that omit specific model numbers.

On the flip side, there’s also no rush to go out and replace all your existing Apple Watch chargers. The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 will charge just fine from any Apple Watch magnetic charger — even the original USB-A version — they’ll just charge more slowly. That’s not a problem for overnight charging, and if you’re in a hurry you can always use the puck that comes in the box with your new Apple Watch.
