Apple is offering the first season of the popular Apple TV+ series Severance for free on the Roku Channel to help promote the upcoming second season of the popular show.
The workplace thriller’s second season will arrive on Apple TV+ on January 17. By streaming the show’s first season on the Roku Channel, Apple is giving Roku owners a chance to catch up in time for the premiere.
The show’s entire first season is available on the Roku Channel as part of an “exclusive fan experience” until January 19. In addition to the first season, the Roku Channel will also offer a preview of the show’s second season and behind-the-scenes content, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Roku viewers can also take advantage of a free three-month trial of Apple TV+, allowing viewers to continue with the series when its second season debuts.
The promotion should be successful for Apple, as Severance will be directly accessible from the Roku home screen. Considering Roku has 90 million users, the potential is there for Apple TV+ to score a good number of new subscriptions.
“Partnering with Apple ahead of the highly anticipated Severance season 2 and being able to create an exclusive fan experience that is available to millions of U.S. households, including offering Apple TV+ content outside of the Apple ecosystem, on the Roku Channel for the first time ever, is incredibly exciting for us,” according to Roku VP of growth marketing and merchandising, Sweta Patel.
“Part of the magic of the Roku platform is that we can work with our brand partners to create bespoke experiences that our viewers love and achieve our partner’s goals.”
The free Severance viewing and three-month trial offer follow a free weekend of the full service on all devices. The promotion highlighted many of its “acclaimed originals” to expose the streaming service to possible new subscribers. The free weekend was available in 100+ countries and regions and on any Apple TV+ compatible device, including Apple devices, smart TVs, game consoles, streaming boxes, and via tv.apple.com using the most popular web browsers.
Severance has become one of the most discussed and analyzed series on Apple TV+. The show’s somewhat unusual premise is as follows:
In “Severance,” Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure that surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work … and of himself. In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.
In late December, Apple released an eight-minute sneak peek of the upcoming season two premiere episode of Severance to Apple TV+ subscribers. The much-anticipated second season of the oddball series has definitely kept fans waiting, as it has been three years since the final episode of season one was first streamed. Filming on the second season of the show wrapped in April.
