This Is Why ‘Protecting’ Your New Jet Black iPhone 7 with a Skin or Wrap Isn’t a Great Idea

Make no mistake about it, Apple’s all-new ‘Jet Black’ iPhone 7 is a sight to behold. It’s shiny, it’s smooth, and, well, it’s just beautiful, whichever way you slice it. If you’ll recall, Apple even hyped up its all-new Jet Black iPhone at the company’s unveiling event earlier last month — citing, in particular, the extensive, intricate process by which the Cupertino-company’s manufacturing partners are able to achieve the sheer luminous nature of the color.

If you’ve taken the dive and decided to purchase an iPhone 7 in the glossy Jet Black hue, however, then you’ve more then likely toyed with the idea of going commando style with it, right? To be fair, it seems only rational that after dropping so much money on such an aesthetically pleasing device, one would want only to show it off to friends and foes, near and far — since it’s kind of a big deal when Apple introduces a brand new color option.

Perhaps you’ve realized, however, that a gorgeously, intricately crafted iPhone in the raw, no skins attached — probably isn’t the best way to go about protecting your new device — which Apple, itself, admitted was susceptible to a myriad of potential scuffing and scratching up on the back.

But what about a skin? You know, those crystal clear, apply-it-yourself shields from companies like ZAGG or GhostArmor? Wouldn’t one of those, perhaps, give you the best of both worlds? — protection from scratches and damage to the facade of your new baby, while also providing a clear viewing window to see the device in all it’s splendor?

Ehh, it seems like a great idea on paper, but apparently it’s not the best way to go, as a handful of disappointed Jet Black iPhone 7 users will likely tell you.

According to various media reports on the matter, several users decided to try out one of these skins on their Jet Black iPhones, and unfortunately, several of them have subsequently discovered that the text on the back of their devices had peeled off when they went to either remove or replace them.

As noted by Phone Arena, in particular, this apparent text stripping removed words including “iPhone 7” and “Designed by Apple in California” from the back of some user’s Jet Black iPhones.

For all the naysayers out there, you can see for yourselves what we’re talking about here in the video provided. The gentleman in the short clip had applied (and then removed) a clear SlickWraps ‘Naked Wrap’ from his iPhone, only to discover that some of the text on the back was barely recognizable afterwards.

The issue doesn’t appear to be directly related in any way to the Slickwraps skin, in particular, as other skins have also proven to be just as damaging. Therefore, it’s been speculated that perhaps the text emblazoned on the back of Apple’s Jet Black iPhone 7 is applied very lightly during the manufacturing process.

We’ve yet to hear any word from Apple about what’s going on, but it’s reasonable to assume that if the issue becomes more prevalent, we’ll surely hear something from the company soon.
