Someone has been shooting at Apple and Google employee shuttles in the Bay Area, and local police are now fielding decoy buses and undercover officers in an attempt to catch the person or people responsible.

There have been 20 reported shootings at chartered buses since January. Five of those buses are employee shuttles used by both Apple and Google in the San Francisco Bay Area. Both Silicon Valley firms have taken to rerouting the shuttles as a safety precaution.

The weapon involved is thought to be a BB gun that shoots metal pellets, according to local media. While the shootings have caused broken windows and dented exteriors, no one seems to have been injured in the attacks, ABC7 reported.

“Anytime you shoot a projectile at a moving vehicle, it’s a risk,” California Highway Patrol Officer John Fransen told Business Insider. “That does pose a risk to public safety and we are taking this very seriously.”

In addition, the California Highway Patrol is now using decoy buses to try and catch the pellet shooters. Additionally, CHP is putting undercover officers on the real shuttles, claiming that they will take “appropriate action” if a bus is shot at, though police didn’t detail what that could mean, Business Insider reported. The FBI is reportedly assisting with the case.

The chartering service that owns the buses, Storer, is also offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the shootings.

While the CHP hasn’t mentioned any possible motives behind the attacks, many Bay Area residents are resentful about the gentrification caused by the tech industry, which has driven up the cost of living and rent prices throughout the area. The free employee shuttles are also part of the equation, as residents claim that they drive up rent along their routes.

According to The Verge, the CHP says that they currently have a description of the vehicle used in the BB gun shootings.
