Nokia Is Back with $26 ‘Dumb’ Phone Featuring 31 Day Battery Life

Nokia’s cellular phones were once prized for their ruggedness and incredible battery life, spawning countless hilarious and clever memes that riffed on their supposed indestructibility. They are now making a comeback in the form of “dumb” $26 handsets, complete with the original “Snake” mobile game that consumed hours of our time back in the early to mid aughts.

A startup called HMD Global, which was founded by ex-Nokia execs and purchased the rights to the brand name earlier this year, is releasing its first two models: the Nokia 150 and Nokia 150 Dual SIM. Both of these so-called “dumb phones” will cost $26, come with a 2.4-inch color screen, and cannot connect to the internet or run apps.

They only offer a limited set of basic functions including FM radio, an MP3 player, a VGA camera, standard keypad and a hefty 22 hours of talk time (or 31 days of battery life on standby).

The phones will be built by a Foxconn subsidiary called FIH, which paid $350 million to Microsoft earlier this year for the rights to Nokia’s feature phone business. The Nokia 150 series will initially be released in the Middle East, India, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Africa in the first quarter of 2017.

The handsets are expected to sell well in the lower-end of the market, though some high-end consumers may purchase them for nostalgia’s sake, given their ultra-low price point.
