In another case of new iPhone model growing pains, some folks on the AT&T network who recently purchased an iPhone 18 Pro Max have been reporting problems connecting to the cellular network or even provisioning their eSIM on the carrier in the first place.

Reports of these problems began for some customers as soon as they unpacked their shiny new iPhones on launch day, with users voicing concerns on the MacRumors forums, the Apple Support Community, Reddit, and beyond.

While there are enough comments to suggest the issue isn’t entirely isolated, it also doesn’t appear to be widespread at this point. There’s no word on what’s causing it, but it doesn’t appear to be simply a matter of intermittent connectivity; those who are affected can’t connect to the AT&T network at all.

In an even more unusual twist, we haven’t seen any problems being reported by iPhone 18 Pro users, but only those with an iPhone 18 Pro Max. This suggests that, contrary to expectations, the issue isn’t with Apple’s new and unproven C2 modem chip, which debuted in most of its new iPhone lineup last month, but rather the more established Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 that’s still being used exclusively in US iPhone 18 Pro Max models.

While AT&T has been mostly silent on the issues, the carrier has finally acknowledged the problem this week. Yesterday, MacRumors reported that at least some AT&T customers have been receiving texts encouraging them to update “immediately” to iOS 27.0.1 for a fix:

Hi, it’s AT&T. Action needed: An important Apple software update for your iPhone 18 Pro Max is available. Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911. Update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately — Settings > General > Software Update. Please contact AT&T or Apple if you have questions.

Although Apple released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week, the release notes didn’t make any mention of carrier connectivity problems being fixed, focusing instead on a Face ID glitch that was freezing up some iPhone 18 Pro models, a problem with color artifacts from the cameras, and a more general iOS 27 bug that could lock up the home screen under certain circumstances.

Of course, Apple’s update release notes aren’t always comprehensive, and those three fixes were prefixed with “including,” suggesting there may be other fixes baked in.

Nevertheless, it appears AT&T’s tech support may have been overly optimistic. A post in r/ATT earlier this week — after iOS 27.0.1 was released but before AT&T sent out its text blast — suggests that iOS 27.0.1 has not resolved the problem, and some users are even looking to return their iPhone 18 Pro Max entirely, or at least exchange it for a new one.

However, based on comments in that same thread, it seems this isn’t a hardware problem — or at least not one that only affects specific units, as some have had their iPhones swapped out by Apple only to encounter the exact same “SOS” problem (the indicator that appears when there’s no active cellular plan).

In a statement shared with MacRumors, an AT&T spokesperson insists that Apple’s latest software update should at least help address the problem, but confirms that it’s still “working with Apple” to resolve any remaining issues:

Apple has released a software update to address an issue that may affect calls, data, texts, and 911 calls on a small number of Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max phones. AT&T customers with an iPhone 18 Pro Max should update their phones now to the latest available software. Our top priority is ensuring customers can stay connected when they need it most, and we are working with Apple to make it right.

MacRumors also notes that “thousands of users” have experienced the problem. Although the relatively small number of posts on each of the threads we’ve seen may suggest it’s less widespread, the reports also appear to be more horizontal than vertical — many affected are posting new threads about it on Reddit and other social media channels, rather than piling onto a single mega-thread.

A post earlier today in r/iphone18pro shared what they claim is some inside info from a family member who is a “director level” AT&T employee, acknowledging the problem. Interestingly, it notes that there are “two sets of customers with this issue,” but doesn’t indicate that makes them different from each other, or those customers who aren’t being impacted.

More significantly, it suggests that the iOS 27.0.1 update isn’t for those who are experiencing connectivity problems right now, but rather to “help mitigate future impacts” for those who “have not experienced any issues.”

The post goes on to note that customers who have experienced issues “can return to Apple or an AT&T store for a replacement,” and that a process has been put in place to “prioritize impacted customers.”

There’s no insight here into whether this is a hardware issue, and based on other reports we’ve seen, swapping out an iPhone 18 Pro Max for a new one doesn’t seem to resolve the problem for those customers who are affected. Then again, maybe that’s just a roll of the dice as to whether the replacement iPhone 18 Pro Max also has the problem or not.

If it turns out to be a software issue, then it’s possible AT&T could push out a carrier settings update, or a subsequent patch release, such as iOS 27.0.2, could resolve the issue. However, until we hear more, the best thing to do if you’re being impacted is to reach out to AT&T or Apple Support and see what your options are.
