Apple hasn’t wasted any time in responding to reports of cracking iPhone Duo screens, noting that the company is aware of the issue and reiterating that customers who experience this problem can contact AppleCare for a replacement.

While Apple insists that this issue affects “a small number of iPhone Duo units” — and the reports we’ve seen so far would seem to back this up — it was still a bit jarring to find that some folks encountered it within the first few hours of enjoying their new foldable.

Of course, nothing says “defect” like a problem kicking in that quickly, so there’s never been much of a question that at least a few iPhone Duo devices may have rolled off Apple’s production line in less than prime condition. While it’s nice that Apple is offering replacements, it’s still profoundly disappointing after shelling out $2K or more for a new iPhone. Plus, the limited stock of the iPhone Duo may leave some waiting for a replacement.

In addressing the issue, Apple spokesperson Alex Kirschner shared the following statement with several media outlets:

The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

In the unlikely event that you’ve ended up with a defective iPhone Duo, the silver lining is that you shouldn’t have to wait to see the problem. Kirschner says that while most units aren’t susceptible, the issues will appear quickly on those that are.

To be clear, unfortunate buyers who run into this problem should contact Apple directly, even if they purchased their iPhone Duo through their carrier. This specific problem is a standard warranty issue, so Apple will replace the iPhone Duo even for those without paid AppleCare+ coverage. In some cases, stores have swapped out the defective unit for a new one right on the spot, which means you’re also better off visiting an Apple Store in person if at all possible.

There’s no official word on what’s causing the problem, but the folks at iFixit have a theory. After tearing down the iPhone Duo, the team discovered some key pressure points that could be impacted by manufacturing defects such as wiring and hinge issues. It’s also possible for trapped particles or repeated bending to cause similar problems, but that doesn’t appear to be what’s happening in most of the cases we’ve seen reported thus far.

Still, the iFixit team is mostly speculating based on a physical examination of the iPhone Duo’s innards. That was done using CT scans and 3D modeling to pinpoint possible issues, so it’s a very educated guess, but there’s no confirmation as to what’s causing the problem. It may not even be possible to determine this without examining one of the units that actually has the defect. The one iFixit tore down presumably does not.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that not all of the reports of cracking screens out there are legitimate. While many have been verified by moderators on Reddit and elsewhere, it didn’t take long before a bunch of AI-generated fakes began polluting social media.

From our own research, we have every reason to believe this problem is as uncommon as Apple suggests, but at this point, there appears to be no way to identify whether you’re about to draw “the Zonk” — and you likely won’t find out even after unwrapping it until the problem occurs.
