Apple is rumored to be working on an updated entry-level iPhone, referred to in leaks as the iPhone SE 2 or iPhone 9. Code inside a leaked version of iOS 14 suggests Apple may be doubling down on this iPhone releasing not one, but two models.

According to 9to5Mac, which obtained the leaked iOS 14 code, Apple may be producing a “Plus” version of this entry-level handset that’ll launch alongside the Previously rumored 4.7-inch model.

Other than the screen size, the two models likely will be the same with features such as Apple’s A13 Bionic chip, a Touch ID-equipped home button, and support for Apple Pay.

The new entry-level iPhone will replace the iPhone 8 in the company’s lineup and may be called the iPhone 9. Apple may continue with its naming convention of Plus for its larger phones instead of Max, which it started using with the iPhone XS.

The target launch date for the iPhone 9 Plus is not known, but it likely will be soon. Early reports suggest a March launch date, despite possible production delays due to the coronavirus. Other reports indicate the release may be delayed to the second quarter of 2020 due to delayed PCB shipments.

If Apple is to launch the iPhone 9 Plus in the coming months, it won’t be part of an event. A rumored report from reliable sources suggests Apple is no longer planning a spring event and may release the iPhone SE 2 and other products via a series of carefully timed press releases.
