Citing “some of our friends from Foxconn,” a Chinese blog on Tuesday morning sought to flip the iPhone 8 rumor mill straight on its head, when it posted a new rumor — based on inside information within Apple’s supply chain — suggesting that the company will be releasing only two iPhone models this year, as opposed to the three variants that have for long been anticipated.

This highly suspect news is coming to us courtesy of Chinese blog MicGadget who also alleges that their “friends from Foxconn” had confirmed that Apple’s Far East iPhone manufacturing partner had received orders for only two distinct iPhone models. More specifically, the post claims both of these models would embody variants of the radically redesigned, uber-premium iPhone 8 we’ve been hearing about for months now.

“[Previous] rumors [said] that Apple will release two iPhone 7s’ and one iPhone 8 (or iPhone Edition) models. Today we can tell you, that it’s not true,” alleges MicGadget’s Chris Chang, who goes on to add that “This fall we can see only two models with new technology. Very interesting that rumors leaked new iPhone 8 and big iPhone 8 Plus will have similar dual-cameras.”

We can’t possibly stress the importance of taking this rumor with a grain of salt enough. Not only is it highly unusual for supply chain rumors to go against the grain this close to the kickoff of iPhone manufacturing season, which typically begins in early summer, but MicGadget also has a somewhat hit-and-miss track record when it comes to sharing information about Apple’s imminent product plans.

Not to mention, but the whole 2017 iPhone trifecta idea has been floating at the helm of the rumor mill since as far back as March, 2016, when KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, first published a research note to that effect. He suggested, first and foremost, that Apple would be releasing two iPhone 7s refreshes this year, boasting upgraded internals and 4.7- and 5.5-inch LCD panels, respectively. Alongside them, however, Apple would also take the opportunity to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone by introducing a vastly overhauled, OLED display-equipped iPhone 8 variant.

Mostly all rumors between then and now have corroborated those sentiments — with the most attention, to date, surrounding the fate of the top-tier iPhone 8 variant, which could also be called iPhone Edition, according to some reports. Meanwhile, details about the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus variants have so far been scant, though at the least, we can expect those to ship with Apple’s next-generation A11 SoC.

It could potentially be that MicGadget’s correspondents merely misinterpreted the information from their buddies at Foxconn. However, even despite the conflicting nature of this report, one thing remains a near certainty: in the face of steep competition from devices like the new Galaxy S8/S8+ duo, the general consensus among analysts is that Apple is readying itself to release at least one device that will go toe-to-toe with the true flagships of 2017.
