Apple may delay its new AirPods Pro until the second half of this year or sometime next year, reports Digitimes. These next-generation AirPods are one of possibly two AirPods models that Apple plans to release this calendar year. The company also may be working on a Lite version of its AirPods that’ll debut next month alongside a new MacBook Pro.

The full Digitimes report on the upcoming AirPods Pro is restricted behind a paywall. Still, a preview of the news story claims Apple will defer the launch of these new AirPods Pro citing sources at related suppliers.

Apple is likely to defer the launch of its new AirPods Pro to the second half of 2020 or even 2021, according to sources at related suppliers.

Apple may be forced to delay the expected September or October launch until late in 2020 or early in 2021. Moving the launch date to later in the year may not be Apple’s first choice. It likely had to push out the launch because of production and manufacturing delays as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

This AirPod Pro model is likely the same AirPods X mentioned in recent rumors. Earlier this month, Apple leaker Jon Prosser hinted that Apple was working on new AirPods with a BeatsX-like design. These AirPods, codenamed B517, would sell for $200 with a style that is compatible with running and other high activity sports.

These Pro versions are not the only AirPods Apple may be planning to release this year. Apple leaker Jon Prosser, who accurately predicted the announcement of the iPhone SE, claims Apple is preparing to launch a lite version of the AirPods Pro next month. These earbuds were supposed to be announced at Apple’s March event, but that event was canceled.

Instead of its spring press event, Apple has been announcing new hardware via carefully timed press releases. The company recently unveiled a new 13-inch MacBook Air, new iPad Pro models with a LiDAR scanner, and a new Magic Keyboard with a trackpad that is compatible with its iPad Pro tablets.
