New “Ultra-Thin” MacBooks Coming Later This Year

Many expect Apple’s MacBook line to see a major refresh this year. Reports dating back to March have speculated that Apple has been working on upgrades to the 13 and 15-inch Retina MacBooks, which will feature an even thinner design than the already slim 12-inch Retina MacBook.

Many expected Apple to reveal their plans for the line during March’s “Let Us Loop You In” event, which came and went with no mention of the devices. However, Taiwanese news publication DigiTimes claims to have the scoop on the new devices.

According to the DigiTimes report, a new line of “ultra-thin” MacBooks will be released in the second half of 2016. Citing “sources from the upstream supply chain,” DigiTimes claims that in order to achieve an even thinner form factor, Apple is reportedly recruiting US-based company Amphenol, suppliers of the hinges for Microsoft’s Surface line of tablets, to supply “metal injection molding-made (MIM) hinges”.

While rumors surrounding the MacBook upgrade have been circulating for quite some time, not much is known about what the redesign will entail. There are several rumors claiming that the new MacBooks will contain two of the new USB Type-C ports – one on each side, and that the new devices will be available in Rose Gold and Gold color options.

A release date for the updated MacBooks hasn’t yet been mentioned – DigiTimes only specified the “second half of 2016”. However, many are hoping that Apple reveals their plans for the new lineup during the Worldwide Developers Conference this coming June.
