Latest iPhone Leaks May Confirm ‘Ugly’ Camera Design for 2019

Apple is largely expected to give its 2019 iPhones a fairly controversial camera redesign. This week, two leaks out of the case manufacturing industry are further corroborating that rumor.
We’re talking about the large, squarish camera bump that has surfaced again and again in iPhone leaks and rumors over the past year or so. And while that design hasn’t officially been confirmed, it’s looking more likely as new information comes to light.
CAD Schematics and Case Leaks
The first leak is a set of alleged CAD renders of this year’s iPhones. The renders appeared on Slashleaks Monday morning and are reportedly sourced from production factories.
While they don’t reveal all that much about the upcoming Apple handsets, they do seemingly corroborate the squarish camera bump with a triple-lens design.
Some of the renders apparently depict Apple’s so-called iPhone XI and iPhone XI Max devices, while one of the renders shows off the iPhone XR successor (the “iPhone XIR”).
It’s worth noting that the renders seemingly back up reports that all three 2019 iPhones will sport the same squarish camera bump, despite the fact that the iPhone XR successor will have a dual-lens camera setup instead of a triple-lens one.

A Note About Case Makers
To be clear, these leaks are reportedly sourced out of the Chinese case manufacturing ecosystem. They are not, by any means, official Apple renders or cases.
Still, case manufacturers have a major incentive to get the details right about upcoming devices — and Apple handsets in particular. They’ll often go to great lengths to source accurate information, from the latest rumors to insider data from within Apple’s supply chain.
In other words, there’s no guarantee that these case maker leaks accurately depict the design of the upcoming iPhones. But there’s a good chance that they’re at least fairly accurate.
iPhone XI?
As far as why Apple is redesigning the iPhone camera bump, it’s largely to support a triple-lens setup.
The iPhone XI and iPhone XI Max are rumored to have a triple-lens camera, which could introduce a handful of benefits to consumers — including wider-angle shots, better low-light performance and an overall bump in image quality.
As mentioned earlier, rumor has it that the iPhone XR successor will be upgraded to a dual-lens camera setup. But most current reports agree that it could have the same camera bump.
The 2019 iPhone lineup is also expected to sport new indoor navigation features and two-way wireless charging, as well as a new glass back panel design that could mitigate the obtrusiveness of the bump.
Apple’s 2019 handsets will likely debut at a keynote event this September.
