iPhone 8 Front and Rear Cameras to Shoot 4K Video at 60 FPS

HomePod’s firmware is the gift that keeps on giving. On Thursday, a new tidbit of code was found embedded in the firmware that suggests the iPhone 8 will be able to shoot 4K video at an impressive frame-per-second rate.
Specifically, the iPhone 8 (a.k.a. iPhone Edition or iPhone X) will apparently be able to shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second, according to a piece of code first spotted by Portuguese-language, Brazil-based iHelp BR. What’s more, HomePod’s firmware suggests that both the front- and rear-facing cameras will have the same capability.
The iPhone 7, for comparison’s sake, is only able to shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second from its rear-facing camera. Similarly, the lineup’s front-facing “selfie” camera is capped out at 1080p. 4K video at 60FPS for both cameras is a significant upgrade for the iPhone 8, specifically for the front-facing camera — which has historically been a bit underpowered compared to its rear-facing counterpart.
Presumably, the ramped up camera frame rate will also aid the iPhone 8’s augmented reality applications. Additionally, it could be useful for the front-facing camera’s “Face ID” biometric recognition system — leading to overall faster authentication. It’s not the only upgrade we’ve seen uncovered about the iPhone 8, either. Earlier this week, the HomePod firmware also confirmed that both cameras could gain a “SmartCamera” feature that will auto-detect objects, scenes and environmental conditions.
In addition to camera functionality, the HomePod firmware has confirmed a wealth of other information about the highly anticipated Apple flagship, including the iPhone 8’s general design and sensor notch. In addition, portions of code have revealed that the iPhone 8 will sport a high-resolution OLED display, Tap to Wake and the existence of a virtual Home button. Any signs of display-embedded Touch ID are notably absent, however.
The iPhone 8 is largely expected to be unveiled at Apple’s annual fall event, which usually takes place in September — though the premium handset might face severe supply shortages and delays after its official launch.
