While many of us were likely still holding out hope that Apple’s forthcoming ‘iPhone 7’ flagship would feature that awesome new wireless charging solution, it doesn’t appear, at least to the naked eye, that such will be the case this year.

However, according to a new rumor spurred on by reliable serial Twitter leaker, @the_malignant, Apple may have resorted to another form of advanced charging for its forthcoming iPhone.

To be clear, it’s not wireless charging, unfortunately; but rather, a significantly beefed up form of fast-charging — which is supposedly even better than the fast-charging infrastructure currently employed by the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

Posted to Twitter in the typical leaked fashion, @the_malignant’s images reveal a modified circuit board. This circuit board, according to the rumor, is improved — in that it will boast support for “at least” 5-volt, 2-amp charging capabilities.

For comparison sake, Apple’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus support just one amp. So while the step up may not seem all that significant on paper, Apple will likely market the technology this year as a primary feature of the ‘iPhone 7’. Of course, this would be a departure from previous years, when, even though the iPhone 6s, for instance, featured a form of fast-charging out of the box, the Cupertino-company had been relatively mum when it came to flaunting the feature on stage or in advertising materials.

And I can’t really blame them for holding off on that, either.. After all, several prominent Android smartphones have featured fast charging for a while now, and some are even coming to market with truly wireless, Qi-enabled charging, to boot. So there’s really nothing to boast about when you’re basically “tardy to the party,” right?

Either way, if this rumor turns out to be true, it will certainly be quite interesting to see how Apple implements the improved fast-charging protocol, as described by @the_malignant. It more then likely won’t be anything ground-breaking, so I wouldn’t get my hopes up, but then again, this is Apple we’re talking about, and they do have a tendency to surprise us from time to time.

So let’s just hope the ‘iPhone 7’ is full of surprises this year, yes?

The device should be touching down within the next few weeks. And while we’ve yet to receive official word from Apple about a launch event, September 7th and September 9th have so far been floated as potential unveiling and pre-order kickoff dates, respectively.

Are you looking forward to a fast-charging ‘iPhone 7’ this year? Let us know in the comments!
