The Apple Car is slowly but surely beginning to take form based on many rumors, leaks, and even Apple patents. Now, a new patent reveals that Apple’s fully autonomous car may come with an exterior warning sign that could help alert and inform other people.

According to an article from Patently Apple, Apple was granted a new patent related to a vehicle’s controls. These controls are said to be used for steering, braking, and accelerating the car, as well as adaptive cruise and pedestrian detection. But that’s not all.

Perhaps the most curious information comes in the form of an exterior warning sign. This sign could be used to display brake light information on the rear of the vehicle. But it’s possible that Apple uses it for more than that.

The outside sign may be used to display information related to the vehicle, including its speed, relative speed between two cars—also known as closing speed—and data related to the vehicle’s status. This might include a warning sign letting people know when the car is self-driven or driven by a person.

There’s also the possibility that the Apple Car would show “non-vehicular information.” For instance, the display could show tornadoes in the area, traffic congestion, or that there’s fog on the roadway. It’s also possible that the outside display may be customizable.

When Will We See an Apple Car?

There have been a lot of rumors about the first-ever Apple Car. Some of the most popular rumors are that it’ll be a completely autonomous vehicle and that it’ll feature heavy integration with the iPhone. And even though Apple’s clearly working on new patents for a possible vehicle, we might not see an Apple Car for a very long time. Rumor has it that we might see something like an Apple Car until 2025. However, this is speculation. We’ll have to play the waiting game on this one to see when (or if) Apple actually releases its own smart car.
