TikTok has announced that it is rolling out a new feature that allows users to directly add songs they discover in the TikTok app to their Apple Music playlists.

The new feature will initially be available only in the United States and the United Kingdom. In addition to Apple Music, users will also be able to add the tunes to playlists in other music apps, including Spotify and Amazon Music.

TikTok users should see the feature manifest itself as a new “Add Song” button that will display in TikTok videos. Tapping that button will save the music track either to a default playlist on a designated music streaming app or to a playlist of their choice.

Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, commented on TikTok’s role in driving user engagement with music, while also connecting artists with their audience.

TikTok is already the world’s most powerful platform for music discovery and promotion, which helps artists connect with our global community to drive engagement with their music,” said Obermann. “Add to Music App takes this process a step further, creating a direct link between discovery on TikTok and consumption on a music streaming service, making it easier than ever for music fans to enjoy the full-length song on the music streaming service of their choice, thereby generating even greater value for artists and rightsholders.Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development

The first time a user accesses the new feature, they’ll be prompted to pick their favorite music streaming service which will then be their default music app for using the feature from then on. Songs will then be saved by default to a new playlist in that music streaming app, although users will also be able to select a different playlist if they want to save the tune elsewhere.

The “add to Music App” option will also be available in Amazon Music for Amazon Prime members and Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers. Users will be allowed to save the music tracks to a “TikTok Songs” playlist or any playlist of their choice.

Spotify users will see their music selections saved to a “Liked Songs” playlist on Spotify.

TikTok has long been a place for users to discover new music and the service has a proven ability to make songs go viral. TikTok’s new feature will allow it to earn revenue from music fans.

TokTok has not disclosed the terms of its agreements with Apple, Spotify, and Amazon. However, Variety reports that a source familiar with the deal said no money will change hands. The deal is said to be designed to increase the use of the social network by music fans, while also offering the potential for monetizing the integration with digital streaming platforms, via its SoundOn music marketing and distribution program for artists.

TikTok already offers a “TikTok Music” premium music service that is separate from today’s new feature, which is currently available only in Australia, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, and Singapore. Currently, the company has no plans to launch the TikTok Music Service in the United States.
