Mother Saves Her One-Year-Old Daughter’s Life With the Help of Siri

Quick thinking combined with the help of Apple’s famous digital assistant, Siri, may have saved the life of one-year-old Giana Gleeson’s in Cairns, Australia this past March.

Stacey, Giana’s mother, awoke from her sleep at 5am to the sound of Giana wheezing through the baby monitor. She checked the monitor several minutes later to see Giana, who had been battling a chest infection and bronchitis, slumped over and seemingly lifeless. Stacey immediately rushed into Giana’s room, dropping her phone as she turned on the light to attend to her child.

“Thinking back to that morning, I guess the shock of seeing her blue and lifeless in her cot shocked me so much that I immediately dropped my phone and ran to her to pull her out,” Stacey told Mirror. Instead of fumbling to find her phone and dial emergency services, Stacey shouted at her phone to activate Siri and call an ambulance as she checked her daughter’s airways and began CPR.

Stacey was able to resuscitate Giana while on speakerphone with emergency services. Giana was breathing again when ambulances arrived. The child has since made a full recovery, but doctors have told Stacey that every second in the situation was vital.

“Saving me the trouble of having to physically dial emergency services was a godsend,” Stacey told the BBC. “I had played around with Siri, I thought it was a fun feature. Now I have that feature turned on all the time and it will never be turned off again.”

Stacey has since contacted Apple to thank them, convinced that the seconds she saved by using Siri to call emergency services may have been critical in saving her daughter’s life. She is now a dedicated Siri fan. “I have now learned a vital lesson regarding how technology is able to help us in the most critical of situations and I feel it can certainly benefit people by incorporating similar features into other household devices,” Stacey told Mirror.

Siri is expected to see some major updates next week during the annual Worldwide Developers Conference, including its incorporation into the ‘MacOS’ operating system.
