After announcing its support as an Apple CarPlay partner back in 2015, promising at the time to bring Cupertino’s iOS-infused infotainment system to both new and [older vehicles, eventually], Mazda this week took a major next step in pulling through on those promises by announcing an all-new retrofitted CarPlay upgrade option for select older Mazda vehicles.

“Apple CarPlay™ integration for your iPhone® and Android Auto™ enable occupants to safely use smartphone applications through the MAZDA CONNECT™ infotainment system and help make staying connected and entertained effortless,” the automaker said in a press release, adding that “This integration helps keep the driver’s hand and eyes away from their smartphone.”

How and Where to Get Mazda’s CarPlay Upgrade?

The company’s new retrofitted CarPlay package is available for 2014+ models which are already equipped with Mazda’s proprietary Mazda Connect infotainment system, which gains CarPlay support, in this unique case, via an update to the existing software.

The whole package, which runs $199 plus labor costs, also updates the existing Mazda Connect hardware on older vehicles, adding support for the new Fast Charging standard, dual USB ports and more to sweeten the pot.

Unfortunately, the only place to have your Mazda upgraded with the package is at an official Mazda dealer, and the $199 deal is subject to an additional 2-hours worth of labor charges.

“Customers with applicable Mazda vehicles can schedule an appointment (requires approximately two service hours) with their local Mazda dealerships to have the service performed,” the company said, reiterating the suggested MSRP of $199 + Labor.

What If My Mazda Doesn’t Qualify?

While most (but not all) older Mazda vehicles (2014 or newer) are eligible for the upgrade package, there is a slim chance of ineligibility if you’re lacking the Mazda Connect package.

In that case, there are plenty of third-party CarPlay receivers available today, should you choose to go down that route, including ‘Amazon’s Choice’ — the Boss Audio BVCP9675A with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 6.75-inch Touchscreen display, USB, AM/FM Receiver and more for just $265.05.

Newer Mazda cars, including the 2018 Mazda6, are the first of the automaker’s offerings to support Apple CarPlay as a factory-installed option.
