iPhone SE Cracks Under Pressure in Head-to-Head Bend Test

History often has a ubiquitous way of repeating itself, regardless of the event in question, or the extent to which it made headlines in its heyday. And there’s really no exception to that rule, even when it comes to high-quality, and equally high-profile fails in the tech world.

After all, remember #Bendgate? — that highly publicized incidence in which Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were proven to be extremely susceptible to bending under stress.. Of course, to be fair, that issue didn’t affect a significant number out of the millions of iPhone 6 units shipped; however it still maintained high-profile status, as the web faced an onslaught of cries, proclaiming #Bendgate #Bendgate, for many months that followed.

iPhone 6S Shell Passes the 'Bendgate' Test

By the time Apple’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus began infiltrating the market last September, however, the story began to subside from its time in the limelight — as the majority of users had long forgotten the magnificent extent to which #Bendgate headlines had saturated the internet. And, after all, Apple had learned its lesson, right? The Cupertino tech-company made several key design changes to the iPhone 6s in an effort to bolster its latest and greatest handset, while ensuring customers it wouldn’t be rendered defunct if pressure is ever applied just so.

Now we have the new iPhone SE joining the ever-growing family of Apple devices; and while the SE is considerably smaller than its big brothers — and thus, in theory, should be less likely to bend under pressure, unfortunately some recent controlled experiments paint a much different picture to that effect.

Yep, unfortunately it seems as if the wee little munchkin of an iPhone is, despite its smaller size and burly thickness, much weaker than the iPhone 6s.

Since the recently introduced iPhone SE is essentially built upon the foundation of the iPhone 5s — which never suffered from the backlash of the #Bendgate issue, it’s only reasonable to assume that the new 4-incher would be, well, at the least, on par, with its generations-old twin, right?

Well, unfortunately, according to recent tests conducted by representatives at SquareTrade, Apple’s recently resurrected 4-incher is apparently even MORE susceptible to bending than the current iPhone 6s flagship — thought it’s not likely to bend while in your pocket, thankfully.

In case you didn’t know, SquareTrade is an active, 3rd party warranty provider for tech gadgets of many kinds, and typically conducts its own experimentally significant, mad-scientist style stress tests in addition to the more typical drop, scratch, and torture tests, in order to determine a device’s vulnerability to accruing damage.

You can see for yourself in the video below that, although the iPhone SE is much thicker in the waist than its flagship 6s counterpart, the device appears to buckle under the pressure of just 60 pounds —10 pounds less than the iPhone 6s, which was put through the same tests.

Let’s be real though, it’s clear as the sky on a sunny day that Apple has never manufactured devices for durability over aesthetics. And the above video only solidified the sentiment that, despite their strong points, Apple’s iPhone line-up will never be built for ruggedness.
