January after January, consumer electronics makers and vendors and industry heavyweights from all across the globe flock to the desert oasis of Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES). CES is, simply put, a technological wonderland of the hottest, most innovative new gadgets, devices, and accessories from the biggest names in tech, hosted annually by the Consumer Technology Association.

And while, much like in years past, 2017’s CES saw the unveiling of thousands of exciting new products, innovative technologies, and knock-your-socks-off concepts, you and I both know there’s always bound to be “those few products” among the bunch — those truly revolutionary, must-have gadgets, which, even despite the niche market they might appeal to, are nonetheless destined to make it on our Birthday or Christmas lists this year — if we don’t end up splurging on them beforehand, of course.

That said, the following five products are our personal picks of the litter from CES 2017.

5. Motiv Ring ($199)

The Motiv Ring is the first-of-its-kind wearable with an optical heart rate sensor built right into the band, itself, allowing you to track your heart rate, sleep, and other daily activities for as long as five days on a single charge. When the ring isn’t charging, you’ll be glad to know that you never have to take it off — not even in the shower — thanks to its advanced waterproofing. It’s also reasonable to assume that the Motiv Ring is a bit more comfortable to wear all day than a smartwatch — but we’ll just have to let you be the judge of that much. Motiv Ring is expected to ship by March of 2017, and you can pre-order or learn more about the device by visiting Motiv’s website.

4. Sony Bravia OLED A1E

Just in case you thought LG was the only one bringing the cracker-thin, big-screen TVs to the table this year, you, my friend, would be sadly mistaken! Enter the Sony Bravia A1E OLED TV — a true competitor, ready to go head-to-head with LG’s new W-series OLED panels. Not much is know about pricing or availability of the Bravia A1E OLED TV, but it will reportedly be a super-thin, 4K UHD panel, with both Android TV and Google Chromecast built in — so your content streaming needs should be satisfied right out of the box. To learn more about the Bravia A1E, be sure to visit Sony’s website.

3. Lumigent Smart Desk Lamp

For those, like myself, who simply have to have the coolest new stuff, allow me to introduce you to a slightly more affordable option from the trove at CES this year — “Lumi” — the smart desk lamp that literally responds to the sound of your voice. All you have to do is say “Hi Lumi,” and the Lumigent smart desk lamp will be able to perform a number of obvious (and some not-so-obvious) tasks, such as adjusting the brightness, for example. Also, in addition to a built-in 8 MP camera for taking selfies or conducting conference calls, the Lumigent smart desk lamp features a “robotic arm” mechanism that will change position in response to a “Hi Lumi” inquiry. You can learn more about Lumi — honorary winner of a CES 2017 Innovation Award — by visiting Lumigent’s website.

2. Mohu Airwave ($150)

The Airwave by Mohu effectively ushers in a whole new era of content streaming. Airwave is a wireless antenna that sits next to your TV, promising to fulfill all your digital content streaming fantasies like you never thought possible before. Stream live, local cable channels for free via your preferred streaming device — whether you use an Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, or otherwise. No fees or monthly or annual subscriptions are required, and you’ll even be able to manage your other streaming device(s) from the Airwave interface. No word on pricing or pre-orders yet, but you can always learn more about Airwave over at Mohu’s website.

1. Acer Predator 21X ($9,000)

At over $9,000, Acer’s all-new gaming rig is no doubt the company’s most expensive release to date — but, for what it’s worth, the Acer Predator 21X is also the most insanely spec’d-out, PC gaming rig we have ever seen — like, ever. Boasting a monstrous, 21-inch, curved IPS display at 2160 x 1,080p resolution, Acer’s powerhouse comes standard with the latest Intel Core i7 processors, configurable with up at 64 GB of RAM, two GeForce 1080 X graphics cards from NVIDIA, and much more — all packed into a behemoth package weighing in at 17.6 pounds. Oh yeah, and you’ll also get a total of five cooling fans, four speakers, and two subwoofers to complement your PC gaming experience.
