Powermat CEO Calls Wireless Charging ‘Standard’ for iPhone 8

Wireless charging technology is already being called a “standard feature in the next iPhone,” at least according to the CEO of a popular wireless power solutions corporation.
Elad Dubzinski, CEO of Israeli company Powermat Technologies, Ltd., made the announcement in an April 25 news release about another executive being appointed the company’s Chairman of the Board — which is to say that the release is completely unrelated to Apple, and only uses the tech giant as a context example of wireless charging being adopted into the mainstream tech industry. “With the recent announcement by Apple that wireless charging will become a standard feature in the next iPhone, we are finally at the threshold of mainstream adoption,” Dubzinski said in the news release.
The interesting part is that Apple has made no such announcement. While wireless charging is rumored to be a feature included on this year’s lineup of iPhones, Apple has never publicly confirmed or denied that rumor. Dubzinski could be referring to Apple’s recent entry into the Wireless Power Consortium, but Cupertino joined the WPC quietly, and similarly made no public announcement of its new membership. As the CEO of a prominent wireless charging technology company, Dubzinski could have some insider information about Apple’s future plans, but that’s not the most likely explanation.
There is plenty of evidence to suggest that wireless charging will, in fact, be a feature on this year’s flagship iPhone. Last year, Apple is said to have entered into a “special partnership” with a long-range wireless charging startup called Energous. On the other hand, Apple’s entry into the WPC suggests that the company has decided to explore a more standardized option — which is even more likely considering that the WPC’s Qi standard is a much more practical wireless charging solution. In February, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo similarly concluded that Apple would rely on a “contact-based” wireless charging solution for this year’s iPhone 8.
