If you’re not confused yet by all the conflicting rumors about when the so-called “iPhone Fold” will go on sale, we have another one to add to the mix.

Following a report yesterday from oft-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who predicted the foldable iPhone would face an iPhone X-style deferred release date, China’s Cailian Press has weighed in to say its sources have told it that everything is humming along nicely for a September launch.

The news agency said it’s “interviewed multiple sources from Apple’s supply chain companies,” who have said that the design is finalized, everything is running at “peak production” and September delivery should be “no problem.”

When asked about the rumors of a delayed release, Cailian’s sources claimed they’d heard nothing about product delays, and that there were “no plans to change the September delivery date.” This report was corroborated by China’s East Money and Korea’s The Bell, which are saying pretty much the same things — although it’s just as likely they’ve all been speaking with the same supply chain sources, and everyone is simply reporting what they’re being told.

However, Kuo hasn’t been the only one to suggest that the availability of Apple’s first foldable could slip. In March, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also suggested the device was unlikely to ship to customers in September, but after a Nikkei Asia report suggested it wouldn’t arrive until 2027, Gurman emphasized that it was on track for a September debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with Apple hoping to “put the device on sale around the same time — or very soon after — the new non-foldable models.”

Reports of delays have stemmed from the fact that Apple’s suppliers are said to be facing legitimate challenges manufacturing the device, which is like nothing Apple has ever produced before. In addition to having a hinge and a nearly crease-free flexible OLED panel on the inside, it could also be the thinnest Apple device ever, beating even the svelte 5.1 mm M4 iPad Pro from early 2024.

The rumors of production challenges are almost certainly legitimate, but what’s been far less clear is where Apple’s manufacturing partners stood. In April, Nikkei said that April and May would be the most critical stages to ensure everything remained on track. We’re well past that timeframe now, and these latest reports out of China and Korea suggest all hurdles have been overcome and everything is now moving along swimmingly. Still, we’re talking about cranking out millions of foldables, so it’s not clear how fast they’ll be able to ramp up to meet demand.

One thing that every source has generally agreed on is Apple’s overall production volume: original predictions were in lock-step on 7 to 8 million foldable iPhones for 2026, although Nikkei reported last week that Apple has since bumped that to 10 million. Still, that’s less than 10% of the number of standard iPhones that will come out of Apple’s supply chain this year, but it’s fair to say that Apple doesn’t expect the $2,300+ foldable to be a particularly hot ticket item.

The biggest sticking point between analysts isn’t so much about when Apple will put the “iPhone Fold” on sale (or the “iPhone Ultra” if you’re in that naming camp), but rather when most people will be able to get their hands on one. Even Kuo believes that Apple could have as many as a million units shipping into warehouses in September, which could be enough to open pre-orders right away (or “very soon after,” as Gurman puts it), and just deal with the fact that high demand might see customers waiting 4–6 weeks or more before they can get their hands on one.

It’s that last part that really matters to most folks. Even if the foldable iPhone goes up for pre-order right after it’s announced, only those eager enough to sit at their computers in the wee hours of the morning for the opportunity to fork over a couple thousand bucks for Apple’s newest bleeding-edge product are likely to have even a remote chance of scoring one in September. The rest of us will be left waiting regardless of when Apple launches it.
