Several of the more prolific iPhone rumors are beginning to take shape into reality, if a recent report by Nikkei Asian Review is to be believed. According to the report, Apple is looking to release three separate iPhone models in 2017 – a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch model, each with the flat LCD display we’ve all become accustomed to, and a “premium” 5.5-inch or larger model with a curved OLED screen, akin to Samsung’s latest premium smartphones.

According to the Nikkei report, Apple may look to introduce “a premium handset that will be either 5.5-inches or larger equipped with a screen bent on the two sides.” Citing a source “familiar with Apple’s plans”, the report states that Apple’s smartphone rival, Samsung, will likely be the sole supplier of the curved OLED display for the new premium iPhone. If true, the displays will likely look and operate in a very similar manner to Samsung’s latest flagship devices, the Galaxy S7 Edge and the Galaxy Note 7.

The report corroborates a number of iPhone-related rumors that have been circulating the internet for the past year or so. Nikkei reported last November that Apple would be looking to eventually ditch their traditional LCD displays in favor of OLED screens by 2018. Similarly, respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the switch to OLED displays by 2019. Early rumors were likely fueled by Jony Ive’s comments in an interview with The New Yorker, when he noted that his iPhone’s display, when compared to the OLED display of the Apple Watch, “feels very, very old.” OLED displays, in addition to being flexible (obviously a prerequisite for a curved wraparound display), offer more impressive contrast ratios, deeper black levels, and an overall sharper image.

Another rumor, that Apple would be looking to introduce three new iPhone models, came to us this past January from Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo speculated that the upcoming iPhone release, widely assumed to be known as the iPhone 7, would feature three iPhone models – a 4.7-inch iPhone 7, a 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus, and another 5.5-inch model, the iPhone 7 Pro. Kuo predicted that the premium iPhone 7 Pro model alone would feature an incredible dual-lens camera system, while the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus would feature single lens cameras that are slightly upgraded from those found in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. As the release of the iPhone 7 draws closer, however, most now think that Apple has dropped the idea of introducing a “Pro” model, and is adding the dual lens camera to the iPhone 7 Plus, instead. Perhaps Kuo’s prediction of a third “premium” iPhone model wasn’t incorrect – it was just a bit early.

In addition to both of these rumors, speculation surrounding the 2017 iPhone release began this past April, as talk began of the 10th anniversary iPhone sporting an entirely new design. Kuo once again jumped into the foray, predicting that the 2017 iPhone release, likely to be called the iPhone 8, will sport an all-glass, bezel-free enclosure and a wraparound OLED display, in addition to a number of other features. Combine all of these rumors, and Kuo’s incredible track record when it comes to predicting Apple products, and Nikkei‘s report seems quite credible. Although the release of the iPhone 7 is just around the corner, it just might be the iPhone 8 that will blow all of our minds.

Will you be ordering the iPhone 7 or waiting patiently for the iPhone 8?
