Your state’s most used emoji is really weird. Okay, that’s not totally true for every state. As it turns out, populations of various states are extremely normal. The people of a few other states, have some serious explaining to do.Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 3.04.35 PMSwiftKey recently published an extremely interesting study, and subsequently an infographic, describing each state’s most used emoji. Now, these don’t reflect raw statistics of usage, rather they reflect the how much one particular emoji is used in comparison to the other states. The complicated mathematical equations all add up to one interesting factual piece of information.

SwiftKey goes on to say that “These findings come from an analysis of one billion emoji from aggregate SwiftKey Cloud data, an opt-in service offering backup and sync of your language insights. This is occasionally analyzed for pertinent trends, as well as to make sure SwiftKey’s predictions are as accurate as possible.”

We can see here, the most commonly used emojis reflect many great features of the Golden State. Yes California has great bike trails, beautiful oceanic sunsets, delicious Pho, and plenty of fresh sushi. New York must be in a constant party-mode as their emoji usage reflects celebration and dancing. Other popular emojis include public transportation and an eggplant (insert your own interpretation here).

Other popular emojis in the Buckeye State represent the state’s beautiful fall weather. Least popular: seashells and mountains, not surprising considering Ohio is infamously flat and nowhere near an ocean.
