Why Apple is Waiting Until iPhone 8 to Switch to OLED Technology

One of the bigger trends in tech as of late is organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs. It is a newer technology that is more advantageous than the current liquid crystal displays (or LCD) company’s use for their smart phones. Many major mobile manufacturers are making the switch over to OLEDs, which puts pressure on Apple to transition to OLEDs as well.
Recent rumors have surfaced across the internet about Apple possibly making the switch, but the latest one seems to hold more water than the rest.
According to Ashraf Eassa of The Motely Fool, he believes that Apple will make the transition over to OLEDs in 2018 instead of 2017 for a number of reasons. He believes that since Apple plans on launching the iPhone 8 in 2018, it would make sense that Apple would debut the device with an OLED. He also thinks that Apple may wait until 2018 instead of 2017 for “competitive reasons”, allowing the company to toy and tweak the OLEDs to perfection after every other major mobile manufacturer pushes them out haphazardly in 2017.
Eassa’s claim of a 2018 release is supported by a recent news article from 4K News that claims Japan Display, a major OLED manufacturer, will start mass-producing OLEDs for mobile by 2018. The company currently makes LCD displays for iPhones, so the conversion should be a “natural shift.”
However, this hasn’t stopped other companies from trying to get bids from Apple for future OLED displays. LG, who has created OLEDs for the Apple Watch already, is apparently also in talks with Apple for iPhone OLEDs. According to Softpedia, the company is planning on boosting the size of its facility in order to accommodate for the influx of iPhone displays in the coming years.
For now, we must wait and see when Apple makes the shift, and with what major OLED manufacturer they decide to partner up with.
