Apple has been the livelihood of many notable people. It all began when Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple on April 1st 1976. Much has changed since 1976, when Jobs and Wozniak were working out of a small garage in California. The company has seen many intelligent people come and go in its decades of existence. In this article you will be able to learn a little more about four of them and explore the places they’ve called home.
One of Apple’s best, Jony Ive – Apple’s chief design officer, has been with the company since 1992. Ive is renown for designing Apple’s most prestigious products including, the iPod, iPhone, MacBook, and Apple Watch.
Tim Cook maintains the last featured home on the list, and is currently the newest addition to Apple’s prestigious persons list. Cook recently became the CEO of Apple on August 24th, 2011. Cook is in headlines today due to developing a strong relationship with China since Job’s death. Since Cook took over, we have seen Apple growing steadily. iPhone sales in China alone could push Apple to becoming the first trillion dollar company in the world.
It is clear that these people are very intelligent, know exactly how to push a business to the top of the ranks, and are compensated accordingly. While we know a lot about their past, accomplishments, and fortunes, most of us have no idea how they live. Most of Apple’s notable people live in large mansions, however, other’s homes might surprise you.
Steve Jobs lived in a mansion in Woodside, California for many years. The home was originally constructed for a mining mogul and his family. A prominent architect named George Washington Smith designed the home in the 20’s. Jobs eventually stopped caring for the home and let nature slowly tear it apart. Jobs and set out to demolish the house in order to build a smaller, more modern, home in its place. Due to the home’s heritage and distinguished owners, the home would eventually become part of a legal battle for protection. The process to protect the desirable home would have taken too long to legally protect, and Jobs went forward with the demolition in 2010. Here are photos of the once prestigious Jackling House.
Years before the demolition of the Jackling House, Jobs moved to a different home in Palo Alto in the mid 1990’s. Located on the corner of Waverley Street, this is where he shared his life with his wife Laurene Powell. The house is British country style and blends in well with the rest of the homes in the area. The house was lightly furnished, as jobs had lived most of his life. Jobs could be seen walking through the neighborhood with his wife on most days. This was of course, until his health began to deteriorate. Powell still resides here.
Steve Wozniak’s former home finally sold this year. The mansion was partially designed by Wozniak in the 80’s and he had lived in the home with his family for decades. Randy Tung, a patent lawyer, bought the mansion in 2009 for $3.1 million dollars. The mansion was again up for resale, and had sat on the market for years. Just this year, a pharmaceutical entrepreneur by the name of Mehdi Paborji has become the new owner. The 7,500 square foot home features six bedrooms and all white walls. The home sold for $3.9 million.
Jony Ive currently lives in a four bedroom, 7 ½ bath mansion in San Francisco. The street the home is located on, is reportedly nicknamed “Billionaire’s Row.” This street is lined with many other historically significant homes, which average $3,280 per square foot. Ive’s mansion was originally listed for $25 million dollars and purchased at an astounding “discount” for only $17 million dollars.
Tim Cook’s home can currently be seen from Google maps with his BMW parked out front. The “modest” home is modern looking and sleek, a dream home for many. While not a mansion by any means, Cook’s home is still very cool. The 2,400 square foot home boasts four bedrooms and a small yard. The relatively modest home was purchased for $1.9 million in 2010 and is most likely worth a lot more today. Tim Cook was quoted stating “I like to be reminded of where I came from, and putting myself in modest surroundings helps me do that. Money is not a motivator for me.”
The masterminds behind Apple have surely left a legacy. While some of Apple’s geniuses have decided to spend their earnings on huge lavish mansions, like Jony Ive, others have decided to live more modestly. Tim Cook is currently one of the most influential men in the world and even his home of choice continues to be of influence. He does not live anywhere close to his means but rather lives in a way that reminds him of his upbringing. Not only does Cook live in a respectably humble home, he has planned to donate his entire fortune to charity. Humility is a desirable trait, and Cook seems to be a gleaming example of that.
