In case you haven’t noticed, from time to time, Apple likes to shake things up a bit — particularly when the company introduces new hardware in otherwise lively hues. The most recent instance of this happening, of course, would be when the Cupertino-company unveiled its iPhone handset in a chic and fashionable ‘Rose Gold’ color last year.

Well, don’t hold your breath, but according to a recent (though perhaps somewhat questionable) rumor, Apple might be gearing up to make another big transition on the color spectrum this year, too. What color could they possibly be thinking up now? How about a deep sapphire, midnight blue — a la Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5, to tickle your polychromatic palette?

Of course, that’s if a recent rumor out of the Far East is to be taken with anything more than a grain of salt, right? Nevertheless, according to the popular Japanese blog, Macotokara (which has in the past offered up a slew of accurate rumors pertaining to Apple’s product plans), Apple will be doing away with the company’s good-old ‘Space Gray’ color option this year — and in place of it, will be a deep, midnight blue.

The same report also alleges that Apple will be utilizing the same LCD glass panel as it has in previous years (which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise); and that the other three color options — Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold — are still in the pipeline as expected.

Space Gray originally joined Apple’s iPhone line-up as a color option back when the iPhone 5s touched down in September, 2013. The Space Gray color — which is essentially just a lightened up hue of Apple’s long-employed black-clad aluminum — was for a few generations the darkest color option of iPhone available. However, it could very well end up being that Apple wants to “liven things up a bit,” so to speak, by periodically introducing new and exciting colors to the flagship iPhone family — which has, for some time, maintained a relative consistency.

Samsung made a similar move when it introduced its Galaxy S6 handset in a deep, midnight blue color back in 2015.

What remains unclear, of course, is if Apple will be introducing a different shade of deep blue or if the Cupertino-company will be introducing a deep blue color option at all.

Of course, the ‘iPhone 7’ has yet to be formally introduced, although it’s widely expected that the device will be unveiled within the same, relative timeframe of previous major iPhone launches — towards the end of September of this year.
