Will Future MacBook Models Ditch the Iconic Headphone Jack? Apple’s New Poll Suggests So

“Do you ever use the headphone port on your MacBook Pro?”

In a rare move that may indicate Apple is, at the least, evaluating the future of the 3.5mm headphone jack as we know it. The Cupertino-company on Wednesday began conducting a poll in which it asked users whether or not they even use the headphone jack on their MacBook Pros.

It’s the sheer phrasing of the question that Apple is asking its most die-hard fans, however, that may signify the company is at least toying with the idea of axing the jack on yet another product. Unfortunately, they didn’t do this for the iPhone 7, which understandably deterred a lot of would-be customers. So perhaps the company is learning from its mistakes, trying harder to actually survey the interests of its dedicated user base, prior to cutting and gutting I/O ports entirely of its own volition.

The company also appears to be asking several other questions about how often their customers use other ports, such as USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, etc. — more than likely in a bid to determine if any precious space can be saved on the inside of its future MacBook models.

Originally reported by MacRumors earlier this morning, the surveys issued by Apple also asks certain users about other, non-hardware-related aspects of their Mac usage patterns — such as how they typically import photos, and whether they prefer longer battery life or greater portability, among other things.

Apple is widely expected to release a major refresh to its iconic MacBook Pro — perhaps at a special media event within the next few months or so. The 2016 MacBook Pro, as it’s long been referred to, has been rumored to feature a redesigned chassis featuring a touch-sensitive OLED ‘Touch Bar’, upgraded internals, and much more. However, whether or not the company will be using the results of its new survey to determine whether it ditches the headphone jack on the forthcoming MacBook Pro, too, still remains to be seen.

I have to admit, though: even despite all the controversy and user frustration over the company ditching the long-in-the-tooth 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7, it’s definitely refreshing to see Apple gouging the interest and tendencies of its users BEFORE just getting up and making that decision on its own.

Sure, some of us are still pretty ticked off that the company ditched the jack on the iPhone 7; however, I think for the most part, users are beginning to come around to accepting the reality of a jack-less iPhone — especially the users who realize that it’s absence didn’t come without other improvements that make the iPhone 7 a uniquely powerful, immersive device, such as the handset’s stereo speaker setup, IP67 waterproof certification, and more.

Would you consider buying a MacBook Pro if it didn’t have a headphone jack? Let us know in the comments!
