New Details of the Extreme Sports Apple Watch Have Emerged (+ Why I Think There Will Be a Redesign)

Hi everyone. Bloomberg recently reported that the new “Extreme Edition” Apple Watch will have a stronger metal case and a larger display, according to their sources. The metal case makes perfect sense, as this model will be aimed at extreme sports. Apple Watch owners are much more likely to accidentally bump the device multiple times, and aluminum is not nearly as durable as a material like titanium. 

Bloomberg also reports that the screen will be larger. This has been corroborated by display analyst Ross Young, who said a few days ago that it will be a 1.99-inch display. This corresponds to a 47 to 48mm case.

The report mentions other improvements such as better battery life, resolution, etc. The price of the watch could be over $699.

The more I think about it, the clearer it is to me that what we are looking at is going to be the flat Apple Watch that Jon Prosser and Ian Zelbo showed us last year. I believe that the watch they thought was the Apple Watch Series 7 was this new Apple Watch “Extreme.” Let me tell you why.

It would not make sense to launch an Apple Watch aimed at extreme sports with those round corners that are very fragile. A flat screen is much better protected. But there is another reason: increasing the size of the display.

Last year’s Apple Watch Series 7 was supposed to be flat, but Apple and its manufacturing partners had some production issues with the assembly of the display. Enlarging the panel might make things easier, but that’s just my opinion and not based on inside information.

However, I asked people who are familiar with the matter what they think about the price of this device, and they said that it should be around $799, which is quite expensive for an Apple Watch. Still, I believe that many people will buy it if it covers all the needs of extreme users who use different smartwatch brands because the Apple Watch can not keep up with their pace. Therefore, if Apple markets this watch properly, and we know that Apple’s marketing team does a good job most of the time, this could be a promising device in terms of sales.

Apple is set to unveil three new Apple Watches in September. An updated Apple Watch Series 8, a new Apple Watch SE, and this new “Extreme” Apple Watch.

The Series 3 will be finally discontinued after these launches (though it should have been a year ago). While I do not think this will be the case, Apple could try to replace it with the current Apple Watch SE.
