The iPad Air 3 is set to make an appearance in the next few months, with most rumors pegging the device at having a March announcement date and a late March or early April release date. The latest iPad Air 3 rumors, however, seems to be the most interesting of all, with a report suggesting that the device will have a 4K display.

According to the report, the 4K display will be made by General Interface Solution and TPK, and will certainly mark an interesting point for the tablet market, which has been stalling over the last year or so. It is certainly possible that innovations such as a 4K display on a tablet will help somewhat reinvigorate the market, even if some experts suggest that tablets will soon be obsolete. Of course, there have been tablets with 4K displays in the past, however Apple has long led the tablet market, and it is a big deal for the company to be adopting the technology.

The reports come with another tidbit of information about the iPad Air 3, suggesting that the device will have a cool 4GB of RAM. Considering the fact that the iPad Pro also features 4GB of RAM, it makes sense that Apple would want to unify its flagship iPad lineup. This also makes sense considering the fact that technology has been getting better along with the complexity of apps.

More complex apps, and more of them, require the use of more RAM in order to function properly, and some have argued that Apple has been late in upping the RAM of its product line, especially in the iPhone. Still, it’s nice to see Apple offering iPads that will last, and be able to handle apps for at least the next few years.

Of course, it’s important to note that the report comes from DigiTimes, a website that has long reported on Apple rumors but which has a mixed track record when it comes to accuracy. Despite this, the sources for this particular report reportedly do have a good track record and has proven reliable in the past.

Some suggest, however, that the term 4K may not actually refer to the resolution, but may instead simply refer to the iPad Air adopting technologies used in the iPad Pro, which got an oxide-thing film transistor used on the 5K Retina iMac.

There have been plenty of other rumors about the iPad Air 3 and what it will include. For example, reports suggest that the device will include a four-speaker design, which basically means that users will enjoy a stereo sound whether they hold the device in horizontal and vertical position. This speaker design was featured in the iPad Pro, and most suggest that the iPad Air will be very similar in design to the iPad Pro in general.

Next up is the fact that the device will reportedly make use of an LED Flash, which is certainly an interesting choice by Apple, and suggests that the company is a bit more willing to embrace tablet-based photography than it may have been in the past. While the iPad has long had a camera, it has never been the photography device that the iPhone was, however it can still be handy to have as a way to take photos when needed around the house.

The iPad is also often used to video chat with friends and family, and while the LED flash won’t really impact that process considering the fact that it will be more used for the rear-facing camera, it is nice to know that Apple understands that many use their tablet for various photography purposes.

The iPad Air has been due for an upgrade for a while now. Apple refreshed the iPad mini and released the iPad Pro last year, however the company somewhat neglected the iPad Air, arguably the most important iPad in its lineup.

Apple revealed recently that sales of the iPad had slipped significantly over 2015, information that wasn’t exactly unsurprising, but highlights the need for innovation in the tablet market nonetheless. It is likely, however, that the tablet market will continue to slip, largely due to larger smartphones and hybrid devices.
