The iPhone XR was the first Apple handset in years to be offered in several vibrant and colorful variants. This year, Apple is rumored to be sticking to six colors — but it may just switch up the available options.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman on Monday tweeted an image of glass shards in several colors. According to Gurman, the purplish and greenish shards are new color options for the upcoming iPhone XR successor. (Presumably, that means that the shards are fragments of the rear glass panel of the upcoming handset.)

If it’s legitimate, Gurman’s leaked image would corroborate a previous report suggesting that the iPhone XR’s successor would come in a couple of new color options.

On Friday last week, Japan-based blog Mac Otakara reported that the 2019 iPhone XR would be available in new Green and Lavender color options. Interestingly, the site also suggested that those two new colors will actually replace Blue and Coral, both of which will be discontinued this year.

The site notes that the current White, Black, Yellow and (PRODUCT)RED options will remain available on the next-generation handsets.

New colors are never a bad thing, but it is fairly unexpected for Apple to discontinue its Blue iPhone XR model. Based on anecdotal reports and informal polls, the Blue variant appears to be one of the more popular options for the 6.1-inch handset.

Of course, there’s always the chance that these reports are mistaken and that the new Green and Lavender options will be introduced as additional options to the existing color lineup.

Besides the new color option, the iPhone XR successor is largely expected to sport roughly the same design as the 2018 version — with one exception.

A couple of reports have indicated that the new 6.1-inch LCD iPhone could adopt the same squarish camera bump as its OLED counterparts. That’s despite the fact that the iPhone XR successor is rumored to have a dual-lens camera instead of a triple-lens setup.

If Apple sticks to its usual release schedule, the 2019 iPhone XR will be unveiled at a keynote conference this September alongside new versions of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.
