If you’ve been following Apple’s iPhone from day one, then you’ll likely know that the Silicon Valley tech-giant’s late co-founder, Steve Jobs, was never a huge fan of the modern stylus — at least when it came to interacting with touchscreen devices.

“Who wants a stylus? You have to get them and put them away, and you lose them all the time. Yuck. Nobody wants a stylus,” Jobs was quoted saying on stage at the original iPhone’s unveiling event, back in January of 2007.

Yet even despite his overwhelming opposition towards the otherwise conventional input method, Jobs’ company nonetheless released its own, unique take on “the modern stylus” — the Apple Pencil — when it unveiled the 12.9-inch iPad Pro last September.

And ever since, the Apple Pencil has carved out for itself a niche unlike any other — allowing users to interact with their 9.7- and 12.9-inch iPad Pros with precision and grace, unlike any “conventional” method we’ve ever seen before.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, however, Cupertino will soon be providing iPad Pro users with a “major” software update, which will greatly expand upon the inherent functionalities and capabilities of the Apple Pencil.

The report, which was published earlier this week, alleges that Apple’s forthcoming iPad Pro update — fueled specifically by the Apple Pencil — will bring to the table a host of new features, including what Bloomberg is referring to as a rich and powerful new note taking and annotation experience on iPad.

“Apple has considered allowing users to annotate objects in many applications across the whole operating system, including in Mail, the Safari web browser, and iMessage, similar to what Samsung Electronics Co. offers on its Note smartphones,” according to the Bloomberg report.

We already know that Apple’s iPad Pro line is expected to undergo a major refresh — possibly in the first-half of 2017 — with the company rumored to be introducing a slew of redesigned models, including a new 10.5- or 10.7-inch model to replace the venerable 9.7-inch iPad, and perhaps even a new 12.5-inch (or larger) ‘iPad Pro 2’.

However, there’s no date set in stone for when the forthcoming update will roll out. It’s likely to touch down within the first-half of 2017; however, whether that entails an early spring release — alongside the anticipated new iPad models, or at the Cupertino-company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2017, alongside iOS 11 — still remains to be seen.

Apple’s Pencil is already a great tool for artists and professionals, and students, alike — which is often used to sketch, draw, take notes, and jot down ideas on Apple’s iPad Pro. However, it would definitely be a welcomed addition to see the company introduce new proprietary software-based technologies to make interaction between iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil even more intuitive, wouldn’t you agree?
