Early last week, a post on the LG Display blog claimed that Apple may be looking to release a new iMac featuring an 8K display later this year.

The post, which appeared last Tuesday on the LG Display Newroom site, describes the technology behind, and future of, 8K displays. Also known as “Super High Vision (SHV),” 8K displays boast a 7,680×4,320 resolution and 16 times the pixels of a normal full-HD display.

In discussing future applications of 8K technology, the article mentions Japan testing 8K broadcasts, and Korea preparing an 8K demonstration for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018. The article then made another claim, which went mostly unnoticed for several days, stating that “Apple… announced that they will release the ‘iMac 8K’ with a super-high resolution display later this year.”

Although LG is one of Apple’s partners when it comes to displays, currently manufacturing the displays for the iPad, and many of the MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPod Touch displays, the statement made in the article is questionable.

Apple is certainly always on the cutting edge with display technology – late last year a new iMac was released with a 5K display. However, Apple has not yet made any announcement regarding a new iMac, and nothing about a new 8K display. It’s possible that the statement was made by accident, but perhaps LG and Apple are working behind the scenes to release a display before 2016.

At the time of the writing of this article, the statement about the 8K iMac has not been removed or modified from the blog post.
