While we’ve heard a rumor or two suggesting that Apple could, potentially, be tweaking the display technology of its forthcoming iPhone 7 flagship, we’re all but certain that any major revisions — such as, say, OLED technology — will instead be touching down as a hallmark feature of next year’s ‘iPhone 8’.

However, if a very recently surfaced image turns out to be valid, it appears that eager iPhone 7 hopefuls could be treated to an interim display boost — and one that may very well constitute Apple’s most prolific resolution jump in years, at that

Earlier this morning, images of what appear to be standalone iPhone 7 display panels appeared on the internet for the first time. What’s so surprising, though, is that these alleged iPhone 7 display panels — if, indeed, they are iPhone 7 display panels, of course — reveal that the Cupertino-company’s forthcoming 5.5-inch flagship could potentially feature a whopping 2K (or, perhaps more realistically, a QHD) display resolution — which means, more than likely, that the resolution would clock in at a still impressive, eye-popping 1,440 x 2,560 pixels, as opposed to legitimate 2K, or 2,048 x 1,080.

An identical QHD resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 is currently employed by most of the top-tier Android manufacturers on the market, including Samsung’s entire Galaxy S7 line, and the new Galaxy Note 7.

What’s more, these images — which appeared first and foremost on popular Chinese social media blogging site, Weibo — also appear to show the 4.7-inch iPhone’s display panel having been bumped up to a solid 1080p (1,080 x 1,920) resolution — up from the inherent 4.7-incher’s resolution, which clocks in at a dated 750 x 1,334, according to GSMarena.

By all measures, dear readers, we sincerely suggest that you take this rumor with a substantial serving of salt until further notice, however — especially since this is the first time we’ve heard of such a dramatic resolution bump for the iPhone 7. However, for Apple’s part, it’s also equally important to note that one of the company’s primary display supplies, JDI, has been producing panels at these aforementioned resolutions for a while now..

Although it’s still somewhat questionable to assume that Apple would jump resolutions so abruptly like that..

“Why is it so questionable?” you ask. Well, Apple would face a number of hurdles in adopting higher resolution displays — particularly in terms of its many 3rd party app developers, and ensuring that their apps continue to work smoothly on the increased resolution displays. That’s not to say that Apple will never make the jump, of course — as the company more than likely will, sooner or later; it’s just probably not going to happen this year.

What do you think about an ‘iPhone 7 Plus’ with a QHD display? Let us know in the comments!
