Ming-Chi Kuo reported a couple of days ago that the Apple Watch Series 7 was supposed to have a body temperature sensor, but the Cupertino-based company decided to cancel the project because the algorithm did not meet Apple’s standards. This happened during the EVT stage last year, so it’s safe to assume Apple has been working on it ever since. Kuo added that the company could include this feature in the Apple Watch Series 8 if nothing goes wrong. I was not convinced about it, so I reached out to a few sources and asked for their opinions on the matter.

Will the Apple Watch Series 8 Have a Body Temperature Sensor?

It’s not clear at all. People familiar with the matter say there is no confirmation of this. While Apple has been working on adding body temperature sensing to the Apple Watch for the past few years, development has slowed down in Cupertino.

While it could happen, do not expect it to work perfectly. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, and we might not ever see this launch.

The Apple Watch is not exactly known for being “innovative” every year. I would not be surprised if Apple uses the same sensors as in the Series 7, changes one or two things, and calls it a day.

People familiar with the matter say the company knows it needs to bring something new to the Apple Watch Series 8 if it wants to continue to grow sales, and that could be the incentive Apple needs to make a move and add this new sensor.

However, you should not expect a fully functional sensor that shows the exact temperature. Instead, we are dealing with another concept that will tell you if your temperature is higher or lower than average – so you’ll know if you might need to see a doctor, but it will not take accurate readings.

My Take

As most of you know by now, I am not only a journalist and Apple leaker but also a technology analyst. Therefore, I can also give you my opinion on something based on all the currently available information.

I would not rule out a body temperature sensor in the Apple Watch Series 8, and let me tell you why. First of all, the company is actively working on it. While it’s true that it’s not working on it as hard as it was a few years ago, that does not automatically mean that the project is being discontinued.

Next, the Apple Watch SE, which is scheduled to launch in September 2022, will be almost identical to the Series 8, and the Cupertino-based company needs something to differentiate these two models, and that could well be a body temperature sensor.

I believe that Apple will indeed include the sensor in the Series 8, and its engineers will work as hard as they can to get the best algorithm. I think the main problem last year was that they tried to get the sensor to give the user its exact body temperature, which did not work – but with the different approach they are going to take this time, I think there’s a good chance that it goes well.

I can not give you a definitive answer today, but I’ll definitely keep you posted.
