Recently leaked information about Japan Display’s next generation LCD panel technology, which could ultimately see its way onto the next iPhone, suggests that a number of impressive new technologies are just around the corner for Apple’s flagship handset — chiefly among them, a touch sensitive, waterproofed design element.

Japan Display, who provides the majority of Apple’s iPhone LCD panels each year, recently introduced its new ‘Pixel Eyes’ LCD technology. According to the leaked photos and supporting specification documents, Pixel Eyes will feature a much thinner bezel than the company’s previous generation liquid crystal displays — down to an impressively thin .5mm from the first generation’s .8mm size bezel.

Additionally, the 2nd generation of Pixel Eyes is said to recognize stylus input from sources as thin as 1 mm — which is down one-half from the previous generation’s 2 mm threshold. Even more intriguing, however, is how the new Pixel Eyes technology is said to respond to touch input even when the user has wet fingers or hands.

Interestingly enough, this revelation all but confirms that Apple’s forthcoming 10th generation iPhone will be 100% waterproof. How exactly can we rationalize that? Well, for starters, it’s one thing to create a fully-fledged waterproofed design — by creating an element by which the handset can survive spills, rain, and even complete water submersion. However it’s something entirely different, altogether, to create a phone boasting a display capable of responding to wet finger input.

So the situation essentially boils down to a classic case of “love and marriage” — where you just can’t have one without the other, err, in this instance, the latter without the former. What are your thoughts about the possibility of a waterproofed iPhone? It’s clear as the sky is blue, of course, that Apple is going to have to seriously step up its game moving forward, but does that feature, in particular, make the iPhone more appealing to you? Let us know in the comments.
