$4,999 iMac Pro Launches Dec. 14 with Unique Lightning Cable

Apple will begin selling its ultra high-performance iMac Pro this Thursday, December 14, according to sources with close ties to the company’s enterprise channels who revealed the news to AppleInsider.

Unveiled back in June at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference 2017, the $4,999 iMac Pro is not only Apple’s first desktop computer to boast the distinctive ‘Pro’ designation, but the machine aims to satisfy professional users with its long list of advanced features, specs, and technologies.

For the “entry-level” buy in price of just $4,999, iMac Pro hopefuls will be treated to the following specifications:

• A zippy, 8-core Intel Xeon CPU, coupled with 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB solid-state SSD drive.
• Apple’s stunning 27-inch 5K Retina display boasting a true-to-life 5120 x 2800 resolution.
• iMac’s familiar, aluminum unibody ‘all-in-one’ design, boasting an exclusive matte Space Gray chassis with color matching peripherals.
• Connectivity options galore, including 4 combination USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, 4 full-size USB 3 ports, an SDXC card slot and 10Gb Ethernet port.
• As far as graphics performance, the iMac Pro features a Radeon Pro Vega 56 GPU, boasting a generous 8 GB of HBM2 video memory.

There are, of course, several upgrade options for those who aren’t pleased with the stock slate of bells and whistles. Users can also choose to upgrade the CPU to a 10- or 18-core configuration, the RAM to as much as 128 GB, and onboard storage as either 2 TB or 4 TB, for example. Additional pricing details beyond the $4,999, however, remain under wraps at this time.

Exclusive Surprises

Additionally, you’ll be given a Space Gray colored Magic Keyboard 2 in the box, as well as a Magic Mouse 2 or, optionally, a Magic Trackpad 2 instead.

It was also reported on Tuesday that iMac Pro will ship with an exclusive Black colored Lightning cable to complement its special edition Space Gray chassis and accessories.

This is interesting, of course, because it would be the first Lightning cable Apple has offered in a color other than white. While you can always pick up a uniquely colored cable online, we secretly hope Apple decides to release this black cable for everyone else to buy — especially since most third-party charging devices have explosive tendencies, right?

All things considered, for those who have the liquid capital, Apple’s iMac Pro will offer a compelling suite of extremely powerful features for the price — even compared to some of the even less capable Windows PC machines on the market, believe it or not! And of course, if $4,999 is just too much to fathom, fret not as Apple could be working on several new computer projects — including a ‘modular Mac’ form factor — which could debut in the coming years, and for a lot less money if we’re lucky.
