Smart home security systems are incredibly popular these days, offering homeowners new and easy ways to control and customize their home’s security. Vivint, in particular, is offering a special deal for 2020 that those interested in a new security system should take a look at.
To help out, we’re reviewing exactly what you’ll get in a Vivint smart home security system, how it compares to other options, and if this deal is worth pursuing.
Vivint’s Wide Variety of Sensors
The core of a smart home security system is the devices that the system can offer, and just what they’re capable of. Vivint provides a wide variety of options, including:
- Doorbell camera.
- Outdoor camera.
- Ping camera for indoor setup.
- Smart locks.
- Element thermostat.
- Garage door lock.
- Touchscreen control hub (included in every system).
Those are excellent options for an integrated smart home, and Vivint clearly knows what quality smart devices look like. Vivint’s cams include intelligent motion sensors, night vision, and easy access to live video feeds right from your home. Alexa and Google Assistant voice compatibility is also included.
There is also an additional level of products you can buy if you are looking for more sensors. Vivint sells door, window, motion, tilt, glass break, pendant, and flood/leak sensors, among others. These all integrate with the system as well and make it easy to protect specific access points around your home. It’s an impressive package – only the larger security platforms can offer such a variety of devices to meet diverse needs.
Professional Installation Deal
Vivint is not a DIY setup. You’ll need to contact Vivint, get a quote for your home, and have the system professionally installed, then set up remote security monitoring. This is where Vivint’s big deal comes in – if you purchase a system for at least $599.99, you’ll get free installation and activation (normally $100), and month-to-month pricing plans.
So, is this a good deal? Free installation and activation is the deal that most professional smart security brands offer. It’s so common that it’s become an expectation. So while that’s nice to see, Vivint isn’t doing anything unusual and compared to other high-end competitors that all have similar deals.
Their month-to-month pricing plan is a bit better, however, because it allows for more flexibility that’s not always an option with other big brands.
As for the smart devices themselves, adding more devices is going to cost you. A simple sensor addition is around $50, which is $10 to $20 more than competitors sell them for. There’s no good reason why adding on devices is so expensive with Vivint, which means going beyond the $599.99 deal isn’t a good idea on a cost basis alone.
We also have to consider monitoring fees. To qualify for the deal, you will need to purchase a service package that includes monitoring. Unlike other brands, Vivint locks a variety of features behind their service agreement, including smoke detection, medical pendant support, and the ability to view live video with mobile access.
Plans start at $30 per month, with higher tiers at $40 and $45 per month that add more smart home integration and video surveillance services. You can easily find smaller security brands with plans for $10 to $15 per month that don’t lock important features behind a paywall, so it’s unclear why Vivint is taking this approach.
However, the top-tier package does make a great choice for protecting senior living homes like granny flats, with its combined pendant support and video surveillance.
Vivint System and Controls
Vivint’s controls are based both on the app and the included touchscreen hub. They have very similar interfaces and are well-designed. The app makes it easy to view live feeds from multiple video cams, arm and disarm your system with a tap, and control smart locks or other devices you may have.
The app’s layout is great, the controls are easy to understand, and it’s not too complex, making it a good choice for those who aren’t that familiar with security apps.
Vivint features excellent compatibility with other smart devices. If you already have smart systems with Google Home/Nest, Amazon Echo, or Philips Hue, Vivint can interact with them seamlessly, so you don’t need to worry about juggling apps or losing functionality.
The bad news is that “Smart Home Integration” is locked behind the $40 per month service plan, so you’ll have to pay to integrate all of your devices at once. Again, this is something that no other security platforms really do, and it’s a little bewildering.
Vivint is a fantastic, industry-leading smart home security solution with Alexa and Google Assistant integration, included touchscreen hub and more, but it does come at a price. Although, Vivint’s free professional installation deal may be enough to sway those on the fence.
