Sadly, Apple products are sometimes stolen from Apple stores and from Apple users. This may be due to their high resale value when compared to other products. This time, it wasn’t a Mac or an iPhone theft, it was a pair of high-end drones from an Apple store. “Jeri E. Duncan, 36, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was charged with two felony counts of theft-possession of stolen property, one felony count of possession of a controlled substance and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a statement from Lake County sheriff’s office,” writes Daniel Brown from the Chicago Sun Times.

“Gregory J. Ganci, 50, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was charged with two felony counts of theft-possession of stolen property and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia,” Brown continues. The two Apple drones were found with Duncan and Ganci in their car along with heroin, Brown writes, based on a police report.

While it isn’t known exactly which models were stolen, the DJI Phantom 4 Camera Drone could be the type of drone taken from the Apple store on that particular day. At a whopping $1,199.95, the Phantom, “is the smartest flying camera drone from DJI, allowing you to capture superb aerial images on your iPhone or iPad,” according to Apple’s product page. If the stolen drones were Phantoms, the high price tag is likely why the drones were targeted by the thieves, likely looking to sell them for cash.

Daniel Brown reports other Apple stores in other states were hit by the thieves, which suggests a pattern. ABC 7 Eyewitness News claims both Ganci and Duncan matched the description of thefts in other Apple stores in Schaumburg and Oak Brook, according to Apple. Duncan was held in jail, not making his $10,000 bail. Ganci was also held, with a $75,000 bail, according to ABC News.

Apple products are commonly targeted for theft. It underscores the importance for Apple customers to be aware of their surroundings and be safe. Thankfully, many of Apple’s products can be located by Find My iPhone app. Theft is unavoidable sometimes, but the loss of property can usually be replaced, thankfully no one was physically hurt.
